  2. What is Absolutism? • Absolute rule is when a monarch has total control over the political, economic, and social aspects of their country. Queen Elizabeth is one of the most well known absolute rulers.

Justifications Monarchs needed to justify their rule: • Divine Right of Kings- power to rule comes from God, who had chosen the monarch • Social Contract – Collective agreement to give up personal power to higher authority, to protect society Hobbes’ “Leviathan” called for an absolute ruler to combat the natural condition of war.

  4. Absolute Ruler’s Perfect World • Politically? • Head of State, complete authority, no representative assembly to answer to • Economically? • Mercantilism allows monarchs to bring wealth from colonies to mother country • High tax rates to finance wars, lavish palaces, and interests of the monarch • Religiously? • Head of church, no Pope or powerful bishops to critique the monarch • Socially? • Loyal citizens, no powerful nobles vying for the throne • Militarily? • Large military to secure and conquer territory to control
