  2. Objectives • 1. List the common causes that can lead to depression. • 2. Identify the typical symptoms of depression. • 3. Review the two main types of depression and their characteristics. • 4. Asses the correlation between depression and dementia. • 5. Describe treatment techniques that can be used with patients with depression.

List the common causes that can lead to depression. • Loss of Independence due to illness, disability, financial circumstances, etc. • Loss of physical function as a result of mobility, sight, hearing, and taste. • Loss of peers through death. • Loss of the ability to perform activities that used to bring joy and fulfillment

Identify the typical symptoms of depression. • Prolonged depressed, sad, anxious or empty moods • Feeling worthless, helpless, or experiencing excessive or inappropriate guilt • Loss of appetite and interest in food, or overeating • Irritability, restlessness or agitation • Loss of energy and enthusiasm, chronic fatigue. • Hopelessness about the future, pessimistic thoughts. • Loss of memory, inability to concentrate. • Loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities • Withdrawal from social engagements, isolation • Unexplained aches and pains • Recurring thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts or actions

Review the two main types of depression and their characteristics. • The two main types of depression are • a. situation depression • b. major depression • - Situational depression is a normal reaction to a painful event, such as : death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or a divorce. It is not biochemical. • - Major depression affects more than 19 million Americans. 30% or sufferers seek help, although 80% of all cases can be effectively treated. Symptoms of depression usually are more intense and last longer.

  8. 5. Treatments for Depression • Contact MD, obtain medication • Community mental health centers (CMHC) provide treatment based on the patients ability to pay • Medicare does pay 50% for mental health care • LAUGHTER • KIND WORD • SUPPORT

  10. What is therapeutic humor? The Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH), a 20-year-old international association designed to advance the understanding and application of humor and laughter for their positive benefits, has an official definition: “Therapeutic humor is any intervention that promotes health and wellness by stimulating a playful discovery, expression, or appreciation of the absurdity or incongruity of life's situations. This intervention may enhance health or be used as a complementary treatment of illness to facilitate healing or coping, whether physical, emotional, cognitive, social, or spiritual.”
