  2. Your Mission Step 1: Dig deep into the heart of Madrid to find an amazing space that you can analyze.  It could be a cultural spot, a statue, a monument, a garden or park, the inside or outside of a building, or a street corner. Step 2: Analyze and critique your space through the lense of our classroom discussions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday using Google Earth. Use the guiding questions on slide 3 if your space is from above and on slide 4 if your space is close-up.  Use slide 5 questions for both close-up and far away. Step 3: Create a one-minute monologue about your space. Put any notes onto the side of your slide under Speaker notes. Step 4: Create a picture on Google Earth of your space and place it on the slide that is labeled with your name on it.

  3. Global View/Birds-Eye View/Aerial View/Airplane View -What Geometric patterns or motifs can you see?-What can you see and what can you not see from your view of your place?-What nature do you see or not see?-How dense does it look and how much sky can you or can you not see? -If your picture is of a landscape, what did the Landscape Architect have in mind when creating this outside masterpiece?

  4. Closer Look -What does it feel like to walk down a narrow street? What do you see/notice and not see? Describe with adjectives.-What does it feel like when you walk down a broad street? What do you see/notice and not see? Describe with adjectives.-What does the outside and, if possible, the inside of your structure/location look like?-If there are people in your picture, what are they doing? What do they look like? Where are they going?-Is there signage or vehicles. Can you tell what they are for? Does it look the same or different from the same sign in the USA?  -What is the architecture of the building that you choose?  Is it old/new/Gothic/Renaissance/Modern? What evidence on the building suggests the style? -What is the "accidental beauty" of your picture?

  5. Overarching Questions -What can you do here? -What are some examples of decorative elements? -What are some examples of making people feel comfortable and welcome? -Is this a public or a private space? -Is the space intense and hectic or peaceful and calm? Explain. -What is the appearance? -What is the purpose of the space? -What is the accessibility for the disabled, for a pedestrian, for a car, for public transportation? -Is there nature in your space? -Are there both open and confining areas or one or the other? -Looking around, does anything compete for your attention?

  6. Is the aerial view considered? What does an architect say, about creating a building? • "When I design a building, I make a model, then I look at the model from street view.  The aerial view is not considered. I strive to have the building be approachable." What does a landscape architect say, about creating an outside space?  • "I always focus on the aerial view and don't consider the view from the ground. The landscape is meant to be seen from the top floor of a palace or from a sky scraper."
