  1. Your Social Security BenefitsAnd Work How Social Work Incentives Can Help You With Getting And Keeping a Job AND Not Loose your Benefits

  2. Do You Know:That You Can Earn Money & Keep All or Most of Your SSI Check? • Social Security lets you make up to $85 per month before you loose any $ from your check • If you make more than $85 per month, you only loose $1 for every $2 that you make from your SSI check

  3. Example #1 • You earn $85: You get $674 in your SSI check • You earn $100: You get $666.50 in your SSI check • You earn $300: You get $566.50 in your SSI check • The more money you earn, the more money you have!

  4. You Can Make A lot of $Without Loosing Your Medicaid • In fact, you could make too much to get an SSI check ($1,429 in one month), and still get your Medicaid benefits • It’s a rule called 1619(b)

  5. Are You in School and Want to Make $? • You need to know about Student Earned Income Exclusion • You can make $1,640 per month, up to $6,600 per year without any loss of SSI $ for 2009 and 2010. • Up to age 22 and in school or training program

  6. What is Property Essential to Self Support (PESS)? • SSA does not count property that you use in a trade or business (e.g., inventory) or use for work as an employee (e.g., tools or equipment). Other use of the items does not matter (Work World). • What you own to make $ does not count as “resources” for SSI eligibility ($2,000 for single person, $3,000 for a couple)

  7. What’s an Impairment Related Work Expense? • Any medical expense that you or your parents are paying for out of your own pocket that helps you work may be deducted directly from you pay • This will raise the amount you get in your SSI check when you are working

  8. What’s a PASS Plan? • Social Security can help you pay for transportation to and from work, tools or equipment to take to work (including computers), or to start your own business. • All you need to be doing is losing $ from your SSI check because of income

  9. What’s a PASS Plan? • Must have an identifiable work goal or activities related to establishing a work goal • Must be written • Must show a plan to achieve the employment goal or identified milestones • To get a PASS plan form from SSA: • www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ssa-545.html
