  2. Result Clauses • A result clause is another use of the subjunctive mood in a dependent clause. • The Result Clause will always appear subordinate to the main/independent clause in a Latin sentence.

Result Clauses • The Result Clause indicates the outcome of the action in the main/independent clause. • Purpose = reason for the actionResult = outcome of the action • Frequently indicated by adjectives or adverbs of degree in the main clause, “ut”, and a subjunctive verb in the dependent clause.

  4. Indicators Positive • tantus – so much, so great • ita, sīc – so • tam – so • Negative • nōn, nihil, nēmō, numquam, nūllus

  5. English Examples • He smelled so bad that we had to leave. • They do so much work that they finish early every day.

  6. Latin Examples • illī adulēscentēs quidem erant tam dissimilēs ut nēmō putāret eōs esse frātrēs. • ingenium Caesaris fuit tam ācre ut nē ab hostibus dūrissimīs quidem mollīrī posset.
