Salivary Glands Mouth Amylase (enzyme) breaks down starch into simpler sugar -CD Produces saliva that contains an enzyme (amylase) Teeth cut, grind and tear food -MD Esophagus Mucus allows food to slide down by peristalsis Stomach Muscles churn to break apart nutrients and create a soupy mixture of mostly undigested nutrients called chyme. -MD Liver HCland pepsin start to break down protein into amino acids -CD Small Intestiine Produces bile Most digestion occurs here -MD & CD Enzymes digest fat, protein and carbohydrates here -CD Gallbladder Bile breaks apart fat into small fat droplets here -MD Stores bile Villi absorb nutrient molecules into bloodstream for cells to use Most absorption of nutrients occurs here Pancreas Large Intestine Produces enzymes for the digestion of fat, carbohydrates and protein Absorption of water, vitamins and minerals Rectum Waste material is compressed into solid form Expulsion of solid waste occurs here
