Why did baby doll dresses become popular

Sylvia Pedler, a designer during World War II, is credited with inventing the baby doll dress, which was originally a short nightgown. It's important to keep in mind that the shorter length of the children's version was designed so that diapers could be changed quickly and easily. Pedler never used the phrase "baby doll" herself, but she supposedly loathed the woman who popularized it.
