  11. Being Healthy • What makes a person healthy? • Health is a combination of: • Physical • Social • Mental well-being. • It takes all 3 to be a healthy person.

  13. Physical Health • Your physical health involves your body and how you can keep it strong. • Eat a well-balanced diet. • Get regular exercise. • Get at least 9 hours of sleep each night. • Go to the doctor when you are sick. • Avoid Risky Behavior.

  14. Mental Health • Your mental health relates to your emotions and feelings. • Express your feelings appropriately. • Achieve your goals. • Accept responsibility for your actions. • Talk to someone when you are upset. • Have a positive outlook on life.

  15. Social Health • Social health involves how you relate to other people and your social connections. • Support your family members. • Have a friendly attitude. • Be a dependable and loyal friend. • Respect others. • Don’t put other people down.

  17. Measuring Your Health • You can’t judge how healthy you are just by looking in a mirror. A self-assessment will help you judge your real health status. • Self-assessment – A careful examination of your own behavior.

  18. What is Wellness? • Wellness is a state of well-being or a balanced health. • By making wise decisions and practicing healthy behaviors each day, you will be able to achieve a high level of wellness throughout your life. • EXAMPLE: Eating a healthy breakfast everyday.

  21. Factor #1 • Heredity: Traits passed from parents to children. EX: Hair Color / Skin Color

  22. Factor #2 Environment: The things that surround you. EX: Your Community, Home and, School life.

  23. Factor #3 • Family & Friends: Influences things like the food you eat, the holidays you celebrate, and how you act.

  24. Factor #4 • The Media: Influences what you buy, what you watch on television, and even how you may think.

  26. Risky Behaviors • Risky Behaviors – Actions or choices that can cause harm to yourself or others. EXAMPLES OF RISKY BEHAVIORS: • Running with scissors • Not looking both ways before you cross the street • Smoking / Drinking and Driving • Playing rough sports • Getting into fights

  28. 6 TYPES OF CONSEQUENCES: • Physical – Hurting yourself • Emotional – Feeling upset • Academic – Failing a class • Financial – Losing money • Legal – Getting arrested • Social – Fighting with friends

  29. Cumulative Risks • Cumulative risks are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. • EXAMPLE: • Riding a bicycle without a helmet on a busy street, while it is raining, while talking on the phone………

  30. Objective Thinking – vs. – Subjective Thinking Objective Thinking: Based on FACTS Example: A smoker has a higher risk of dying from lung cancer. Subjective Thinking: Based on YOUR OWN VIEWS Example: Lots of people smoke cigarettes, so how bad can it be?

  31. Prevention – Avoiding Risks Prevention means you take steps to make sure that something doesn’t bad happen. EXAMPLE: I wear my seat belt in the car incase we are in an accident. EXAMPLE: I practice abstinence(not having sex) so I won’t get pregnant or get an STD.

Distinguish between controllable risk factors and uncontrollable risk factors. Compare the major causes of death for teens with those for other age groups in the United States. List the six health risk behaviors that lead to health problems in teens. Name three behaviors you can adopt now to improve your health.

Health today vs health years ago • Health in the Past Infectious diseases were the most significant health problems in the past (Pneumonia and influenza, tuberculosis, diarrhea and ulceration of colon • Health Today Many health problems today are caused in part by unhealthy lifestyles. Diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are examples of lifestyle diseases(diseases of heart, cancer, stroke, accidents)

Risk factors • A risk factor is anything that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems. • Controllable Risk Factors You can control some risk factors by making choices about your behavior. • Uncontrollable Risk Factors Risk factors you cannot control include age, race, gender, and heredity.

  35. Six Health Risk Behaviors • Sedentary Lifestyle • Alcohol and Other Drug Use • Sexual Activity • Behaviors That Cause Injuries • Tobacco Use • Poor Eating Habits Which risk factors are most common at VHS??

  36. Activity: Create a mnemonic device containing the word HEALTH * Use complete sentences Heart healthy exercises such as running or soccer can improves cardiovascular health !! Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables daily !! Alcohol and drugs can destroy a teens health. Lean muscle mass weights more than fat The heart is the most important muscle in the body. Happiness is key to improved mental health!! Share and Compare with Class

To advocate is to speak or act in support of something. • Volunteer at a clinic • Take meals to the elderly • Promote health issues at school • Train for a career in a health field • Set a good example through your behavior
