  2. WW II Timeline 1934- Hitler is elected to power 1938- 11/7- Kristallnacht 1939- 9/1-10/6- Germany invades Poland 1941- 12/7- Attack on Pearl Harbor 1942 and 1943- 7/17-2/2- Battle of Stalingrad 1945- 8/6 and 8/9- Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima.

  3. Outcome of World WarII • The attack was completely unnecessary. • This is what made the U.S. involved in World War II.

  4. “A Date Which Will Live in Infamy” • The attack on Pearl Harbor happened on December 7th, 1941. • President Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed this day as “A Date Which Will Live in Infamy.”

  5. The Nations Involved • The U.S. and Japan were involved. • Japan was the country attacking the U.S.

  6. The National Leaders • Hideki Tojo was the Prime Minister of Japan at this time as well as the Minster of War. • Franklin D. Roosevelt was the President of the United States at this date and was also the Commander in Chief.

  7. Military Leaders • Hideki Tojo was the military leader for Japan. • FDR was the military leader for the U.S.

  8. Winner of the Attack • Japan won this battle; the U.S. lost it. • Although they won this battle, they ended up losing the war. • The U.S. marched back and bombed Japan twice.

  9. Interesting Facts • The USS Arizona went down in 9 minutes. • The memorial over the wreck was dedicated on May 30th, 1962. It rests on the back part of the ship. • Oil is still leaking out of the ship; a few drops at a time. • The USS Arizona is nearing the point of collapse do to the structural damage from the attack and 60+ years of rust.

  20. Materials Ruined USS Arizona (BB-39) - total loss when a bomb hit her magazine. USS Oklahoma (BB-37) - Total loss when she capsized and sunk in The harbor. USS California (BB-44) - Sunk at her berth. Later raised and Repaired. USS West Virginia (BB-48) - Sunk at her berth. Later raised and Repaired. USS Nevada - (BB-36) Beached to prevent sinking. Later repaired. USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) - Light damage. USS Maryland (BB-46) - Light damage. USS Tennessee (BB-43) Light damage. USS Utah (AG-16) - (former battleship used as a target) - Sunk.

  21. Materials Ruined (Continued)… • Cruisers USS New Orleans (CA-32) - Light Damage.. USS San Francisco (CA-38) - Light Damage. USS Detroit (CL-8) - Light Damage. USS Raleigh (CL-7) - Heavily damaged but repaired. USS Helena (CL-50) - Light Damage. USS Honolulu (CL-48) - Light Damage..

  22. Materials Ruined (Continued)… • Minelayer USS Ogala (CM-4) - Sunk but later raised and repaired. Seaplane Tender USS Curtiss (AV-4) - Severely damaged but later repaired. • Repair Ship USS Vestal (AR-4) - Severely damaged but later repaired. Harbor Tug USS Sotoyomo (YT-9) - Sunk but later raised and repaired. • Aircraft 188 Aircraft destroyed (92 USN and 92 U.S Army Air Corps.)
