  1. Grammar & Syntax Revision The Three Little Pigs Once upon a time there was a mother pig who had three little pigs. The three little pigs grew so big that their mother said to them, “You are too big to live here any longer. You must go and build houses for yourselves. But take care that the wolf does not catch you.” Text Analysis: Highlight the nouns. What type of noun is usually used in this text, and why? Underline the noun phrases. How do these relate to the audience? Look for verb tenses. What do you notice? Focusing on the dialogue, what type of sentences are used, and why? Find the modal auxiliary verb and explain its impact on the target audience.

  2. Now try to find grammatical and syntactic features without prompts

  3. Mode, Context, Purpose, Audience This is an extract from a book and comes from the start of the story. It outlines the main characters in the story and is illustrated. It is a text about talking animals, aimed at pre-reading children who will need to suspend disbelief and enter a fantasy world and, perhaps, their parents who will most likely be reading this aloud to their child and may be re-read a number of times. Openings to children’s stories need to be engaging as well as extremely clear, and this is no exception. The reader is immediately invited into a fantasy world of talking animals, and the formulaic opening sequence “Once upon a time” provides clear signals as to the nature of the rest of the discourse. The use of graphology with the story’s accompanying illustration provides the pre-reading child with powerful visual clues as to the nature of the story; these are reinforced by the text itself. As the child’s familiarity with the story grows s/he may assume increasing levels of responsibility for the reading process. ASSESSMENT TASK: write an analysis of the use of grammar and syntax in the extract, relating it closely to the intended target audience and context

  4. Linguistic Concepts Genre (discourse) Audience & Purpose • Verb tenses, modal auxiliaries • Type of nouns – proper, abstract, concrete • Pre and post modification of nouns and verbs – how dense it this text? • Sentences – clauses - what degree of complexity? • Sentence functions: imperative, interrogative, exclamatory, declarative

  5. Rewriting the texts • Choose one of the following options and then make a list a 5 grammatical / syntactical features that you think should be predominant in your text: • Ikea Instructions • Estate Agent Advertisement • Horror short story opening • Suckling Pig Recipe

  6. 3 Little Pigs New Home ...Challenge #1: The first job will be to decide what the house will be made of and what you will use to build it on your poster board. Remember...be creative...and have fun with what you choose! You must stay within budget, but you also must be efficient with what you choose because you must sell the house to the 3 little pigs at the end of this project!...Challenge #2: The second job is to decide how much of the material to buy! You will have a budget of $90,000.00. Here are the costs:Roof - £1 per square foot Labour - £3 per square foot Housing Material - Please assign a cost that is most appropriate for the material you chose per square foot. Place each of these values, along with your totals, into an excel spreadsheet....Challenge #3: Build your house! Use materials purchased to build the appropriate sized house to fit your budget. You can draw or use construction paper to cut out the various pieces of your house. Remember you build a house piece-by-piece. Make sure to label each piece by telling me what geometric shape you are using. You must include 5 different shapes that we have learned in class in your house design. Be creative! .........................Second, you must measure your house and include all of these measurements on your final house design. Tell me the measurement of each piece as well as the measurements of the house as a whole. Calculate the total area of the house. Do not forget to put a For Sale sign and include its shape and dimensions as well....Challenge #4: Sell your house! The 3 little pigs are anxious to have a home that can withstand the "huffing and puffing" of the big bad wolf! Each class period will vote to determine what house the 3 little pigs will buy from each class! Good Selling!

  7. The Three Pigs ... (David Wiesner) The three pigs escape the wolf by going into another world where they meet the cat and the fiddle, the cow that jumped over the moon, and a dragon. This picture book begins placidly (and familiarly) enough, with three pigs collecting materials and going off to build houses of straw, sticks, and bricks. But the wolf’s huffing and puffing blows the first pig right out of the story . . . and into the realm of pure imagination. The transition signals the start of a freewheeling adventure with characteristic David Wiesner effects—cinematic flow, astonishing shifts of perspective, and sly humour, as well as episodes of flight.
