  2. What’s CJD? • CJD is a form of brain damage that causes a rapid decrease of mental function and movement. • CJD is believed to result from a protein called a prion. • CJD can be grouped into classic or new variant disease. • The classic types of CJD are: • Sporadic CJD makes up the most cases. It often occurs for no known reasons. • Familial CJD results when a person inherited the abnormal protein (prion). This type is rare. • The new variant CJD (nvCJD) is an infectious form that is related to mad cow disease • There are several types of CJD. The disorder is rare, occurring in about 1 out of 1 million people. It usually first appears between ages 20 and 70, with average age and the symptoms start in the late 50s.

  3. Symptoms -Muscle weakness on one side of body -Muscular coordination problems -Mutism -Personality changes -Progressive muscular atrophy -Rapid involuntary eye movements -Rigidity -Sensory disturbances -Speaking difficulty -Tremor -Unusual sensations Here is a list of some of the common signs and symptoms of Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease: -Blindness -Confusion -Decreased abdominal reflexes -Dementia -Depression -Disorientation -Hallucinations -Insomnia -Involuntary movements -Memory failure -Mental deterioration

  4. Diagnosis • Tests used to diagnose this condition may include: -EEG : electroencephalogram. -Spinal tap • Ultimately, the disease can only be confirmed by brain biopsy or autopsy. • A neurological and motor system examination shows muscle spasm. • There is loss of coordination related to visual-spatial perception changes and changes in the cerebellum, the area of the brain that controls coordination. • An eye examination shows areas of blindness. EEG: electroencephalogram Lumbar Spinal Tap

  5. Treatment • Here is a list of treatments and procedures that are commonly used to treat Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease: -Blood Transfusion. -Clonazepam: a highly potent anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant. -Deep Brain Stimulation. -Opiate drugs. -Sodium valproate: an anticonvulsant, • There is no known cure. Medications may be needed to control aggressive behaviors, like: sedatives, antipsychotics… • Also, controlling aggressive or agitated behavior, and meeting physiologist, support from the family may be good for people with CJD.

  6. Prevention • To reduce the already very low risk of CJD transmission people should never donate blood, tissues, or organs if they have suspected or confirmed. • Most countries now have strict guidelines for management of infected cows and strict restrictions regarding what they are fed, to avoid the potential for transmission of CJD to humans.

  7. What research is taking place? • Many researchers are studying CJD • They are investigating how CJD can be transmitted and how it damages the brain. • They want to know the development of this disorder to find treatments and a effective cure

  8. News Blood test for vCJD 'unrealistic' In Jaffrey, a woman’s death is probed Former Buffalo mayor died from brain disease CJD 14 cases of 'mad cow disease' found in NI
