  1. ISO Interaction with OCLC-WCRS - Borrowing May 2012

  2. ISO Interaction with OCLC • The following presentation describes ISO interoperability between VDX and OCLC-WCRS for borrowing requests. It will now be possible to send requests directly from VDX to OCLC-WCRS. • The implementation of ISO interaction between VDX and OCLC-WCRS will be carried out in (4) phases: • Addition of 570 OCLC locations to VDX (Completed) : 350 have addresses • Changing the protocol for 275 VDX locations, currently GS (June 11, 2012) • Borrowing – after June 11, 2012 (On request) • Lending - Autumn 2012 (On request) • Advantage: • Eliminating the double management of requests in VDX and OCLC-WCRS.

  3. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Background Data 2010 – 2011 Statistics Borrowing: 8,480 requests with HOCLC as lender in VDX. 149 requests with an OCLC library registered in VDX with the GS protocol as lender Lending: 3,350 requests with HOCLC as borrower in VDX. 60 requests with an OCLC library registered in VDX with the GS protocol as borrower Total: 11,830 vs. 209

  6. ISO Interaction with OCLC – OCLC Locations OCLC Locations in VDX • Currently, OCLC locations in VDX must not be used, neither for lending nor for borrowing. • Once you have implemented ISO interaction with OCLC, you may use them for your borrowing requests. • Easily identifiable in VDX: • In the Location record: • In the Rota (Borrower):

  7. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing Example of OCLC locations holdings display: • OCLC-WCRS non-supplier library which is also not registered in VDX. • OCLC-WCRS Supplier library which is registered in VDX as an OCLC-WCRS lending location. • OCLC-WCRS non-supplier library which is however registered in VDX. • OCLC-WCRS Supplier which is not registered as a location in VDX .

  8. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing • Once OCLC lending locations have been identified, enter them in your VDX Rota.

  9. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing • Check the Delivery Method • For a Copy request, the Delivery Method must be Electronic Mail so that the Email address and the Ariel address are transmitted to the request in WCRS. • Enter in the Item Note field: (optional) • The VDX request (ILL) number • Other relevant information for the request

  10. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing • Add the appropriate amount in the Max Cost. fieldin US dollars ($US), in order to activate IFM fee management. • Mandatory, otherwise the request will be rejected by OCLC-WCRS • Then Authorize your request

  11. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing Operation • VDX checks if the first lender in the Rota is an OCLC location. • If this is the case, VDX then checks whether the next lender is also an OCLC location. • It will repeat this operation for up to a maximum of five (5) locations. • VDX will string these locations together and send a single VDX request to OCLC-WCRS which contains the five lending locations.

  12. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing Operation • Several minutes later, VDX will receive a Status Or Error Report-ind. from OCLC-WCRS containing information concerning the Status of the transaction • Addition of a clickable link in the request History • Identification of the current lender in the Public Notes (AAA)

  13. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing Operation • Replacement of the lender request number assigned by VDX • By the current request number from OCLC-WCRS

  14. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing Operation • If the first OCLC-VDX lender sends a negative response, VDX will receive at the same time a Status Or Error Report-ind. which will appear in the History of the request, and two Public Notes: • One indicating the reason for the negative response. • The other identifying the next (now current) lender. • This scenario will be repeated until either a lender supplies the document or the request passes to the status Not Supplied.

  15. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Borrowing

  16. ISO Interaction with OCLC – Activation • For other details: Consult the complete documentation on the Colombo Web site: Documentation: ISO Interaction between VDX and WorldCat Ressource Sharing (OCLC-WCRS) BORROWER - April 2012 • Week of June 11, 2012: will be activated at QMU. • Those CREPUQ institutions wishing to activate ISO interaction with OCLC may establish the implementation date at their convenience • A member of the Colombo team will come on site the first day of implementation to review operations with the ILL staff.
