  1. Calculating Average Speed Remember… Average = Total ÷ Total Speed Distance Time

  2. The tool we use to help us solve for speed, distance or time is a formula triangle that we call “D-Street.” The D stands for Distance The S stands for Speed The T stands for Time

  3. To use “D-Street,” you cover up the letter that stands for what you are trying to solve for, or what you are trying to find out. When you cover up the letter of what you are trying to find, the formula to find it will reveal itself!

  4. Let’s look at an example… What is the average speed of a snail that travels 10 meters in 2 hours? Speed 10 meters Speed = 2 hours 10 meters 10 meters 2 hours 2 hours = 5 m/hr Distance Time Speed=

  5. Susan ran a 12 km race at an average speed of 3km/hr. How long did it take her to run the race? Time 12 km Time = 3 km/hr 12 kilometers 12 km 3 km/hr 3 km/hr = 4 hours Distance Speed Time=

  6. The bus traveled for 6 hours at an average speed of 60miles per hour. How far did the bus go? Distance Distance = 60 mph X 6 hours 6 hours 60 mph x 6 hours = 360 miles 60 miles per hour Distance= Speed x time

  7. Now try this one on your own: How much time will it take to travel 450 km if you keep an average speed of 50 km/hr? Time 450 km Time= 450 km 50 km/hr 50 km/hr 450 km 50 km/hr = 9 hours Distance Speed Time =
