Dirty Sexy Money • On a recent episode of ABC’s Dirty Sexy Money one of the Characters “Karin” marries a golf pro • Decides she wants a divorce just minutes after they marry • In the pre-nup it stated her husband only gets three million and she gets the rest.
More than Television Drama • Due to increased wealth in today’s society more and more people are getting married for money instead of love • Most of these partnerships are ending in divorces • Checkbook Breakups • Most of the attention is coming from celebrities • Examples: • Kevin Federline turned millionaire after divorcing Britney • And Heather Mills, Paul McCartney’s second wife.
Price-Tag Partnerships on the rise • In a personal ad on Craigslist a Twenty something New Yorker who described herself as beautiful, said that she was looking for someone who made at least 500,000 dollars a year. • She claimed that dating men who made only 250,000 a year was not working out. • Prince & Associates, a Connecticut-based wealth-research firm conducted a survey that showed that most men and women who demand to marry for money want a price of at least 1.5 million • The survey polled 1,134 people nationwide • Incomes were between 30,000 to 60,000 a year • The survey asked: • "How willing are you to marry an average-looking person that you liked, if they had money?"
Money before Love • The results of the survey showed 2/3 of woman and ½ of men would marry for money • Age was a major factor: Woman in their 30’s were the most likely at 74% while men in their 20’s were least likely at 21% • Pamela Smock, a Sociologist at the University of Michigan was shocked by the results: • She stated that this goes against love and soul mates, as well as our main reason to marry • She conducted her own survey, which showed that money does encourage people to marry or if the man is financially stable
Its not Just Women • The survey conducted by Prince & Associates showed that 61% of men who are in their 40’s would marry for money. • Ms. Smock commented that as men get older they seem to be ok with women bringing in more money
The Price of Love • The matrimonial price tag varies by gender and age • Women: • 20s: 2.5 Million • 30s: 1.1 Million • Women in their 30s felt more obliged to get married so they lowered their price tag • 40s: 2.2 Million • Women in their 40s are more comfortable being independent so they will hold out for more cash
The Price of Love • The matrimonial price tag of men is less than woman • Men: • 20s: 1 million • 40s: 1.4 million • According to Douglas Freeman, tax and estates attorney who works with wealthy families stated the reason the males number is lower is because they would feel threatened by a woman who makes several million dollars.
The price is low • With the new landscape of wealth today the price for both men and women seems to be relatively low • 1 or 2 million may sound like a lot but it will not transform your life much
Unhappy Endings • When these marriages turn out to be disappointing the couple always can divorce • Out of the women in their 20s who said they would marry for money, 71% of them said that they expect to be divorced • Out of the men in their 40s, only 27% of them see themselves getting a divorce.
