  3. The First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

  7. Separation of Church and State • The separation of church and state was a fundamental belief of the founding fathers. The basis for this belief is expressed in the First Amendment, which reads: • "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." • What are some controversial issues which have arisen from this clause? • Teaching of evolution • Gay marriage • Government funded faith-based initiatives • Abortion
