  3. 3. English king Charles I gives land to Sir Robert Heath to settle and be named Carolana(the Latin form of Charles) • a. Settlers fail to establish government, so land returns to Charles I • 4. A civil war and England breaks out, Charles I has head chopped off and Oliver Cromwell rules England for 11 years. Charles 1

Charles IIrepaysthose men with a large land grant called Carolina. • These men are the8 Lords Proprietors • They control, govern, and tax the Carolina Colony (what is currently both NC & SC)

  5. 6. 1710 – Carolina Splits over issues around governance, religion, and economies AND WAR!!! • 7. 1729 – Lords Proprietors selllands backto British King; NC becomes aCrown Colony • 8. 2 NC Political Parties are established: Prerogate Party is made up of men owning their position to the Lords ProprietorsVS. Popular Party is made up of settlers from before Proprietor’s control

  6. Great Wagon Road: North-South trail stretching from PA through NC into Georgia. Brought new people to NC backcountry Backcountry: thinly populated settlements stretching from the piedmont to the mountains Sectionalism: strong loyalty to one’s own local region or section
