  1. Madarak és fák napja - május 10 BIRDS AND TREES’ DAY MAY 10

  2. Celebrating this day- the aim to encourage people across the world, especially youth, to be more environmentally friendly, to develop and to deepen their commitment of conservation

  3. Hungary celebrates on:

  4. History Antecendent: Paris Convention signed in 1902 for the protection of useful birds IstvánChernel, ornithologist, organized the first birds and trees day the same year .

  5. In schools Albert Apponyi, Minister of Religion and Public Education, issued a decree ( 26.120 / 1906), according to which, in May or June of each year, Elementary Schools had to pay attention to the Birds and Trees Day in a "nature conservation" and "morality" spirit.

  6. "... to be assured once a year a day for the protection of birds and trees." • This quote is from Herman Ottó, a versatile Hungarian scientist who, in addition to his scientific work, also explored and described the traditional, ancient culture and folk art of Hungarians. • He founded scientific bird research in Hungary by establishing the Hungarian Ornithology Center. On the suggestion of Herman Ottó, May 10 has become the celebration of nature since 1906 • People have been particularly attracted to birds and trees since ancient times. "The Day of Birds and Trees", however, is the celebration of the whole nature when we celebrate that we are brothers and sisters for all living creatures on Earth.

  7. BIRDS

  8. Birds • Fowl creatures all over the world primarily belong to the sky - the Divine Sphere - and they are therefore symbols of the heavenly soul. • In the Hungarian culture: in the days of Christianity, the spirit of shakins and shakeners, in the image of a bird went to the ’after – life’ to find out the future or to fight the malignant spirits. The totem of the conquering Hungarians (the animal of the Árpád genus) was the turul (probably a falcon). According to his origin, the mother of the genus Emese was fertilized. • The symbol of Christianity: when Jesus was baptized a bird/ a dove appeared as the symbol of Holy Spirit

  9. Several bird species are important for humans; some of them are domesticated. • Birds benefit humans and the natural environment in many ways: provide nutrition (meat, eggs) and raw materials (feathers). Some species are considered as pets • the accumulated excrement of seabirds and bats, called guano is used as an effective fertilizer

  10. Due to human activity 120 species disappeared since the 17th century and 1200 species were endangered. Roughly 120 million birds are taken by hunters each year. Their observation is an important task of ecotourism.

  12. blackbird redbreast woodpecker wren Tom-tit starling

  13. carrion-crow magpie Great tit throstle goldfinch nightingale

  15. TREES

  16. TREES • Trees are the most ancient, universal plant symbol (spread) all over the world. • Tree represents eternal development and renewal, fertility; the dried tree is the symbol of passing. We also often find it in Hungarian folk tales: tree-toothed, golden-brown tree. • The branches of the tree of life lead into the heavenly world, its roots go into the underworld; a symbol of the way in which shamanic, tidal, tales’ heroes can reach heaven or underworld.

  17. The benefits of trees • Trees slow down climate change and protect our biodiversity, health and well-being through a number of "services". • The shadow-giving and air humidifying trees significantly alleviate hot summers and so-called heat island effects in cities.

  18. During the photosynthesis, • light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll - a green substance found in chloroplasts in green plant cells and algae • absorbed light energy is used to convert carbon dioxide (from the air) and water (from the soil) into a sugar called glucose • oxygen is released as a by-product

  19. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, "a mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year." A 50-year-old tree enriches the atmosphere with 50 kg of oxygen and converts about 70 kg of carbon dioxide during a vegetation period and 400 kg of other contaminants are filtered out of the air (dust, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide ...) and draws annually approx. 4,000 liters of water into the air. The "ecological service" of this humidifier can not be replaced by today's fashionable steamers and water basins.

  20. People and trees Staying in the nature, in forests or fields, in a city park for few hours, our bodies revive, our physical, nervous and emotional tiredness disappears, we feel spiritually and physically refreshed and renewed.

  21. People living in big cities are therefore intentionally trying to escape from their noisy homes. Walking 100 meters away from the road, behind the noise barrier of trees, shrubs, grasses, we can sit and talk, read and relax. The lurking of the foliage of the trees and the song of the birds, the sounds of the crickets conceal the remaining noise. • We are at home, in Mother Nature. • On the winding roads, our movement, our heartbeats slow down, we can think peacefully about ourselves and the world. Therefore, the parks are called recreational areas rather than green spaces in some countries.

  23. A POEM BY JOKAI MOR:PLANT TREES! • Jókai Mór : Ültess fát!Ültess fát! Hogyha másért nem, lombot ád. Árnyékában megpihenhetsz, Gondot ő visel reád. Jó tavasszal nyit virágot: Messze érzed illatát, Kis madárka száll reája: Ingyen hallhatod dalát. Ültess fát.
