  1. NREL’s Efficiency Testing of Photo-voltaic Energy Cells David Walton, Iain Elliott, Austin Baillie, Jacob Warman University of Colorado, School of Engineering October 16, 2004

  2. What is NREL??? • National Renewable Energy Laboratories • Solar Energy Division • A World leader in solar energy design and testing • Keith Emery is cool and master of all uncertainty

  3. What do they measure? • Measure the efficiency of sample cells sent by clients • Efficiency found by two different measurements: • Spectral responsivity • Quantum efficiency – Efficiency of converting photons into charge carriers (usable electricity) • Current vs. voltage

  4. How do they Measure? • Test cell receives a filtered beam of light • The current produced is converted into AC voltage • Power of the incident light is found by pyroelectric radiometer • Quantum efficiency is determined by AC current/power of the incident light

  5. Setup of Test Equipment

  6. Uncertainty

  7. ISO Certification Requirements

  8. Conclusion • Spectral responsivity is used to get quantum efficiency • NREL is ISO certified, very accurate and precise measurements • Systematic uncertainty is inherently high in PV applications
