Project Mercury Mercury’s insignia! • Was the USA’s first rocket to go into space. • Carried chimpanzees Ham and Enos into space. • Carried 1st astronaut Alan Shepardinto space. • Flew John Glenn around the earth three times • Carried first American astronaut to stay in space for over 24 hours: Leroy Cooper • Capsule size is small, only about six feet across the bottom! • The capsule only weighed about 3,000 pounds! That’s less than one car!
