Dates to Remember: • Team Registration: October 18, 2013 • Regional Pin Design: November 1, 2013 • Coaches Training: November 2– Cosgrove Middle School; 9-3 • SLS T-Shirt Designs: November 22, 2013 • Judges Training: January-February - 5 hours <1 year experience • Spontaneous Workshop: January (TBA) • Spontaneous Day : TBA Thornell Road School (Optional for teams) • SLS Show Off: March • Region 14 Tournament: March 8, 2014: Churchville-Chile Central Schools Mandatory • NYS Tournament: April 12, 2014: University at Binghamton • World Finals: May 28-31 at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa
Responsibilities: • Team members: Creative, cooperative, committed, flexible and available • Coaches: Facilitator, planner, flexible, organized • Parents: Supportive, host/hostess, coach, demonstrator, drivers, fundraising • Registration Fee: $80 (Membership, problem costs)
Coaches’ Responsibilities • Organize and arrange team meetings (Sign out a room at SLS through Sally Schrecker) • Conduct brainstorming sessions and facilitate meetings to allow children to solve the long-term problem. (Socratic Method) • Help the team obtain materials and knowledge necessary to solve the long-term problem using the appropriated money. • Assist team with paper work for competition for Division 1 • Accompany team to all competitions • Save receipts for reimbursement beyond allotted money.
Students Responsibilities • Find 5-7 team members willing to make a commitment from October-March or May • Find an adult coach or coaches • Design and produce the long-term solution • Practice Spontaneous problem solving with coach • Attend all practices and competitions • Participate in fund raising efforts if needed
Parent Involvement • Coach or Assistant Coach • Assist or help at meetings • Offer home as a meeting place • Share expertise on a topic • Provide snacks • Support the team schedule and meetings • Volunteer with the fundraiser, or Sales table • Judge the Regional Competition
Odyssey of the Mind Tournament • Region 14 Tournament: Spencerport Central Schools • Presentation of the Long-term Problem solution can be up to 8 minutes in length • Spontaneous Problem: Five team members solve a spontaneous problem within a few minutes. The problem is hands on, verbal or a combination, verbal-hands on. • Judges: Every team must provide 3 judges for every 2 teams at the Region 14 Tournament • State Tournament: First Place teams advance • World Finals Tournament
Creativity Showtime • Team members perform the solution to the long term problem • Creative problem solving is apparent through: script that was written by members costumes designed and made by members props which were designed, built and assembled by the members How well the team members interact during the performance • Style: props, costumes, special effects, talent
