  1. Genetic Comparisons, Species Diversity and Index of Diversity

  2. How much DNA do we share with other organisms? • http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/Education-resources/Teaching-and-education/Big-Picture/All-issues/Genes-Genomes-and-Health/compareyourdna.htm

  3. Species Diversity • Definition: A measure of the number of species in a community and their abundance • Influenced by species richness: more species = more diverse • More individuals of more species = more species diversity

  4. Index of Diversity • Formula to describe the relationship between the number of species and the number of individuals in a community • d = N (N – 1) / Σ n (n – 1) • where N = total number of organisms of all species • and n = total number of organisms of each species

  5. Tasks • Produce a magazine article for the Biological Sciences Review magazine based on the effects of deforestation and agriculture. Use these links and the wiki to help start you off: • http://rainforests.mongabay.com/0904.htm • http://www.nationalgeographic.com/features/00/earthpulse/rainforest/gallery2.html • Fun Stuff! • http://www.nhm.ac.uk/eb/homepage.shtml • Start with ‘sort it out’ to test your classification skills, then move onto species richness activities
