  4. Why is the Pun Important? • Writers will use these (like allusions) to connect with the reader. • Understanding the puns will help you get to the author’s THEME • The author’s comment on the human experience.

  5. How Do I Detect a Pun? • Commit to read actively • Apply background knowledge • Apply background knowledge in VOCABULARY

  6. Other Clues • Certain genres are more likely to have puns in them…. • Comedies • Certain authors are more likely to use puns • Shakespeare • “Weird” Al • Comedians
