Day of Debate • Two debate teams will be selected to “face off” • All class members not participating directly will be debate judges and choose a winner of each debate • Mrs. Winters will be the debate moderator. My job is to introduce debate participants, keep time, and help maintain a level of decorum

  3. Debate Instructions Each debate team will prepare the following: • A one-minute opening statement that introduces who you believe had the better philosophy for America in the 1960s. Tell reasons why you believe MLK or Malcolm’s approach is best, but do not share many specific arguments, facts, or quotes yet! • At least three well-developed arguments that support your team’s position. • A prediction of your opponents’ arguments and ideas of how to counter those argument. • A one-minute closing statement that summarizes the team’s position.

Day of Debate 1. 1 minute: Pro-MLK team makes opening statement Pro-Malcolm team makes opening statement 2. 3 minutes: Pro-MLK team gives expanded arguments with evidence from documents Pro-Malcolm team gives expanded arguments from the documents 3.3-6 minutes: Moderated free exchange (pick apart each other’s arguments). Each team will receive 1 minute to address opponent’s arguments. Then, the floor will go to the other team, and so on and so forth. 4. 1 minute: Pro-MLK team makes closing statement Pro-Malcolm team makes closing statement
