  1. Year 8 Exchange with College Jean Monnetin Normandy Sunday 17th May- Saturday the 23rd May 2009

  2. Aim of the exchange • British pupils will be experiencing the French educational system in the morning until lunchtime and the French way of life during the day and evenings.

  3. Aim of the exchange • This exchange also aims to be cross curricular with history. • During their stay pupils will be looking at the events of the DDay landings from the French and the British perspective. • To this effect, they will visit in the afternoon, famous places and museums related to the DDay landings. They will travel either by car or by foot as most of these places are in Ouistreham.

  4. Will French and British pupils work together? • French pen friends will accompany their British pen friends to one of these museums. • There will be common activities in PE lessons and an outside treasure hunt in Ouistreham.

Sunday 17th May • We leave Grays Convent at……… • Please be there 20 minutes in advance so we can load the luggage and check passports and the EHIC card before boarding the coach • Departure from Portsmouth at …. • Arrival at Ouistreham Normandy at…. where pupils are welcomed by French families and go home • Pupils meet with their French pen friends and family.

  6. Monday 18th May 2009 • British pupils come to the school with their French partner. They may arrive at different times because some pupils will start their lessons at 8 whilst others will start their lessons at 9 am. (British pupils will be using the same means of transport as their partner. They won’t have to pay for bus fares) • A welcome ceremony as well as a guided tour of the school with the Head and some members of staff. • Pupils will experience a few lessons with their partner according to their timetable or will take part in a PEactivity with their partners.

  7. Monday 18th May 2009 • English pupils will have lunch at the canteen (French parents will pay for this) or will go back home with partners if they are “externes”. Afternoon: • “Treasure Hunt”: With their pen friends, English pupils solve clues given by their French pen friends in order to visit the town of Ouistreham. • Bilingual activities on the beach with their French pen friends.

  8. Tuesday 19th May 2009 am • From 8 until 9 am , lessons with their French pen friends or arrival at school with their partner. British pupils gather in the common room for a brief meeting with their teachers. • 9.30 am:departure to visit M Gauthier’s museum Commando in Ouistreham: a local veteran who took part in the liberation of the town in June 1944. His wife is British, so he will do the explanation in English to our pupils. • Approximate time of the visit : 1 hour 30 minutes. English pen friends must be back at school, at 12.00 as some pupils have lunch in the canteen.

  9. Tuesday 19th May 2009 pm • Departure for Caen at 1.30 pm by coach or by public transport. • In Caen, visit of the castle built by William the Conqueror and free visit (shopping) • Back at school at 5 pm

  10. Tuesday 19th May 2009 evening • 5-6.30: Rehearsal time for the play • 6 pm: Pupils will perform a play in the common room in front of parents and pen friends. • Afterwards, a “welcome aperitif” with the head, the deputy head, French families and pen friends. The Mayor of the town as well as the local press will be there too so that our exchange will be officially known . • The French teachers will show pictures from their visit in Grays.

  11. Wednesday 20th May 2009 • From 8 am to 9 am lessons with their pen friends. • Pupils will work on their project until 12 am. • Lunchtime can take place on the beach with a picnic, it is very pleasant on a sunny day. • In the afternoon, pupils will go by coach to Pegasus bridge memorial museum and Café Gondrée (The first house to be liberated by the Airbone regiment during WWII) they can walk along the canal and catch a glimpse of the Benouvillecastle in the distance and finally the coach will drop them at Ranville British war cemetery. • At 4.50 pm / 5 pm, the coach will take pupils back to school where families will collect them.

  15. Monday 27th April 2009 • Arrival of the French pen friends at school at around 4.30/5pm • Pupils meet with their British families • French pupils visit the school. • French pupils go home with their British pen friend

Tuesday 28th April • French pupils are in school by 8.35: meeting point: entrance hall • Registration: 8.50 • Whole school assembly: 9-9.15am • Pupils will take part in several lessons period 1,2,and 3. • English parents please provide a packed lunch • French pupils leave the school at 11am. English pupils stay at school. • They will visit Covent Garden, and have lunch there, take the boat from Westminster/Big Ben to see the Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the Millennium bridge, Tower bridge, and the Tower of London. • Pupils should be back at 6pm. Parents will be informed via mobile phone. Please be prompt when collecting your pen friend!

Wednesday 29th April • French pupils are in school by 8.35: meeting point: entrance hall • Registration: 8.50 • Year 8 assembly: 9-9.15am • Pupils will take part in several lessons period 1,2,and 3. • Departure of French pupils at 11 am. Visit of the Tower of London. Lunch at the Tower. • Pupils should be back at 5.30pm at school.

  18. Thursday 30th April • 8.45: Arrival of the French pen Friends at school • They leave school at 9 to be able to see the change of Guards at 11 am. • Walk through London, 10 Downing Street, picnic at St James Park, Buckingham Palace Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford street • Return at 6 pm

  19. Friday 1st May • French pupils are in school by 8.35: meeting point: entrance hall • Registration: 8.50- 9.15 • Period 1 and 2 : Quiz prepared by the British pupils on London for the French pupils. • French and British pupils leave school at 11am. Departure for London at 2.30pm where we will see “Romeo and Juliet”. • Return at 6pm approximately.

  20. Saturday 2nd and Sunday the 3rdMay • It will be spent with the family • Departure for Portsmouth at 9 am from the school by bus on Monday the 4th May.
