  15. Formula for demonstrationStep 1 • Prepare a 2% solution of Carbomer in 30% ethanol • Using either Carbomer 934 or 940, stir the appropriate amount of polymer into a volume of water equal to 70% of final desired volume • May require up to eight hours of stirring for complete dissolution • Add the ethanol (to a 30% concentration) and q.s. to final desired volume with water. • Pour into an amber light-protected container and label

  16. Formula for demonstrationStep 2 • Prepare a 2.5% solution of Triethanolamine in water • Measure the appropriate amount (relative to final desired volume) of triethanolamine and pour into a suitable container • Add water q.s.’ing to final desired volume • Stir in a small amount of phenolphthalein to desired color intensity • Pour into a suitable container and label

  17. Formula for demonstrationStep 3 • For the demonstration: • The participants will mix the Carbomer solution with the Triethanolamine solution in a 2:1 ratio • Using 15 ml of Carbomer solution and 7.5 ml of the triethanolamine solution makes a sufficient amount of product for 2-3 people to share. • The demonstration works best with people working in pairs or threesomes. • To make the total demonstration go smoothly, pre-measure the solutions and place each in a small, resealable plastic bag

  18. Formula for demonstrationNotes • Having the participants pour the triethanolamine solution into the bag containing the carbomer usually makes the most dramatic effect; i.e., seeing the color and consistency change • The resealable plastic bags work well when mixing the solutions together to render the final product; i.e., can vigorously squeeze the bags • Can either cut a corner off the bottom of the bag to access the product or reopen the bag and reach in.Product much like Purell® Gel
