  2. History of Sparta • Sparta was formed by some Dorian Greeks around 80 years after the Trojan War. • 5th Century B.C the Spartan’s reluctantly became allies with the Athenians in order to defeat Persia but soon became rivals. • Sparta’s first defeat was the Battle of Leuctra in 371B.C

Daily Life in Ancient Sparta • The men of Sparta were required to marry by the age of 30. • After birth, if the child survived being bathed in wine he/she was brought before the Gerousia so that they could then decide if the child was considered to be puny or deformed. If he/she was found to be this, the baby was thrown of the side of Mount Taygetos.

Male Spartan’s would begin military training at the age of seven. • Women controlled their properties as well as the properties of male relatives that were away with the military. • Spartan men were remained in the active reserve until the age of 60 years old. • Spartan citizens were forbidden (in theory) to own gold or silver. • Only those who have undertaken the education process of the Agoge were eligible to be citizens.
