2. The Dinning Room “The dinning room to which Ivan conducted him was in many ways remarkable. There was a medieval magnificence about it; it suggested a baronial hall of feudal times with its oaken panels, high ceiling, its vast refectory table where two-score men could sit down to eat. About the hall were mounted heads of many animals- lions, tigers, elephants, moose, bears; larger or more perfect specimens Rainsford had never seen. At the great table the general was sitting, alone.”

3. Analysis The description of the dinning shows that general Zaroff is a very wealthy man and that he does not care for expenses. The general has heads of animals that are indigenes (not from/native) to the island which shows that he is a rich man. Also the table was big enough for “two-score men” to sit down and eat. However the description also shows that the general is an upper class citizen who does not care for people other than himself. He has “trophies” in the dinning room and library. Also he has everything a person could ask for/want.

5. Death Swamp “The ground grew softer under his moccasins; the vegetation grew ranker, denser; insects bit him savagely. Then, as he stepped forward, his foot sank into the ooze. He tried to wrench it back, but the muck sucked viciously at his foot as if it were a giant leech. With a violent effort, he tore loose. He knew where he was now. Death Swamp and its quicksand.”

6. Analysis This description tells the reader that Rainsford is resourceful and clever. Although Rainsford knew that someone died in the quicksand, but he went there anyway to try and trick Zaroff. Also Rainsford had a clever plan to dig a hole and cover it with leaves, hoping that Zaroff or his dogs would fall in it. He used his environment to his advantage to try and even the odds in the hunting “game.”
