Alzheimer’s (AHLZ-high-merz) disease is brain failure-a progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys brain cells and affects a person's memory, ability to learn, make judgments, communicate, and carry out basic daily activities. Alzheimer’s is not normal aging. It is a progressive, fatal disease, the cause is unknown and it has no cure.

  12. Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells There are 100 billion nerve cells, or neurons, creating a branching network. Signals traveling through the neuron forest form memories, thoughts and feelings. Alzheimer’s destroys neurons, thus also destroying memories, thoughts, impulse control, personality, etc

History of CART . • In October 1995, the Sumter, S.C., Rotary Club initiated the effort to prove CART works by conducting an eight month testing program which was highly successful • July 1996: District 7770 in South Carolina adopted CART as a project. • April 1999: Our first grant of $100,000 is made to Emory University's Alzheimer's Research Center under the leadership of Dr. Allan Levey. AFAR (American Federation for Aging Research).

  16. History of CART (cont) . • In the 18 months from January 1999 until June 2000, 10 more Rotary districts of the Carolinas and Georgia adopt CART as a project. The first Board of Directors meeting was held in November 2000, bylaws were adopted. They state that 100% of donated funds must go to Research!! • Each district that joins the CART program has two representatives on the board and two votes. The District Chair and the DGN
