  7. Design Practice & Standards • Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) • California Traffic Manual Design Rules & Practice • Always meet ADA Compliance on New Projects • Minimum of Two Constantly Visible Vehicle Indications for all approaches. • One Constantly Visible Pedestrian Indication for each crossing direction. Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  8. ADA Standards Insert Picture of New Ped Ramp Santa Clara & 6th Curb Ramps • ADA Compliant centered on each return • Grooved banding for visually impaired Pedestrian Push Buttons Insert Picture of Push Button • 2-inch Actuators, CSJ Bumblebee Brand Standard • Within 5-ft of crosswalk, goal in practice Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  9. ADA Standards Insert Picture of Audible Ped Signal 4th St Garage Audible Signals • Installed at all new signals with major pedestrian generators • Upon Request if warranted Insert Picture of Streetlight Improvements on The Alameda Street Light Improvements • Install or Upgrade Intersection safety lighting on all major projects Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  10. Audible Pedestrian Signals Installation Criteria • Pedestrian Generators (disabled centers, schools, public transit) • Push Buttons (pretimed vs actuation). Are they working properly? • Major Streets Widths • Continuous, Unobstructed Crosswalks & Indication Visibility • Request from Visually-Impaired Patron Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  11. Audible Pedestrian Signals Installation Time • If criteria met during time of design for new or major modification project, automatic. • Funding for up to 10 locations per year to respond to customer requests. Denied requests are presented at DAC meetings. • Requests take about 6 to 8 weeks. Department of Transportation (408) 277-3743 Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  12. Pedestrian Countdown Signals Background • CSJ evaluation for the California Traffic Control Devices committee (CTCDC) in 2001 • MUTCD 2003 discusses use & recommends operation consistency. Still not California approved. • State of California to adopt MUTCD in August 04 with supplement (Countdown not discussed in supplement yet). Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  13. Pedestrian Countdown Signals CSJ Practice • All new signals & major modifications in Downtown, will use the Countdown Modules. • Deployment outside of Downtown will occur after Caltrans adoption of the device. Equipment & Operation Requirements • Filled Upraised Hand/Walking Person Indications • Double Row Countdown • Start counting at Flashing Don’t Walk. Terminate at the end of the Flashing Don’t Walk (begin of yellow) Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  14. New PPB Equipment Tactile Push Buttons • Vibrating actuator w/directional arrow when “WALK” indication is in effect. • Ambient programmable audible messages. Early Model Install in Santa Cruz CSJ to Evaluate. Recommendations for test site accepted. Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  15. New PPB Equipment Braille Labels & Signs • Useful information for visually-impaired. Challenges • Special-order. Cost. • Maintenance. • Pole placement at existing signals. Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  16. Pedestrian Signal Timing Pre-Timed Signals Insert Picture Of Santa Clara St Green • Downtown SJ, Julian St to Reed St, 4th St to Route 87 • Closely spaced intersections • Predictable traffic & pedestrian patterns Actuated Signals • Intermittent traffic & pedestrian patterns • Minimize delays to vehicles & pedestrians Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  17. Pedestrian Signal Timing Pedestrian Scramble Insert Picture Of 9th & San Fernando • Provide pedestrians with ownership of intersection • Effective at heavy pedestrian traffic locations Challenges • Compliance • Delay to vehicles & pedestrians • Modification cost Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004
