  8. Slow and Steady wins the Race • Sir Francis Drake continued to attack Spain as England Challenged Spanish Claims • England would not provide money for colonies, private money would fund settlements • England would not have a successful colony in America until the 1600’s

  9. French Connection • Failing to find the NW Passage, France focuses on Settling in the Americans • Samuel de Champlain founded a Trading Post in Quebec and leading to New France • France would start a valuable fur trade with the Native Americans

  10. New Amsterdam, New Amsterdam • The Dutch look set up a settlement in Present Day New York • The Dutch would Buy Manhattan Island from Native Americans and set up New Amsterdam • The French and Dutch Colonies could not compete with the colonies of Spain
