  3. Extra Credit Hip Hop/Music and Sociology 4 points extra credit possible Due Monday May 30th The focus of this assignment is not to criticize mainstream commercial hip hop music. The purpose is to use conscious music (mostly the kind that is not on the radio) as a way of looking at issues in our society.

  4. On Wednesday May 30th you will be leading the class:1. You will play the song for the class (clean version) this can be done through a youtube link or cd 2. Share the lyrics 3. Ask the class 2 open-ended questions 4. Call on students to give responses 5. Turn in a hard copy of your lyrics and questions with your name to the teacher

  6. 2) E-mail the instructor the name of the song and lyrics (also include the youtube link if that is how we will listen to the song in class) MUST BE CLEAN. If lyrics or song are not the clean version you will not earn points. You MUST write Soc MW Music in the subject of the e-mail

  7. The sooner you e-mail me your song selection the better, to avoid someone else picking the same song first Only the first 10 students to e-mail their song can be selected for this extra credit option

  12. Social research, debunking myths What is the social life of most serial killers like? Myth: Serial killers are all dysfunctional loners Fact:Most serial killers can hide in plain sight because they look just like everyone else with jobs, nice homes, and families.

  13. Social research, debunking myths What is the intelligence level of most serial killers? Myth: Most serial killers are evil geniuses. Fact:The serial killer as an "evil genius" is mostly a Hollywood invention

Myth: People who go back to drugs after rehab are hopeless and end up over dosing or in jail. Fact:Completing a treatment program is just the first step in the struggle for recovery that can last a lifetime. Recovery is a long process and frequently requires multiple treatment attempts before complete and consistent sobriety can be achieved.

Myth: Make up a “good weakness” like “I’m a perfectionist” “I’m a workaholic” Fact:Better to think of one genuine flaw that you have and then to explain how you are working to correct it. Interviewer will see you as a straightforward and genuine person.

Myth: Weapons-related injuries in schools have increased dramatically in the last 5 years. Fact:Weapons-related injuries have not changed significantly in the past 20 years. Compared to neighborhoods and homes, schools are relatively safe places for young people.

What is the point of social research? • Some think sociology simply states the obvious • It is actually based on research and scientific methods • Often refutes “common sense” • Debunking=looking below the surface or behind the curtain of every day life to gain a deeper understanding of society

Literature review: helps you refine your question, state what you will add to current research 3. Research designs/methods: carefully design to ensure high reliability and ethical methods (how will you get your information?)
