Revisiting Morality • Definition of “moral” • A choice between significant options based on: • Principles derived from reason, family teachings, education, religion or law • To do well on DQ1, your moral dilemma had to include a choice between significant options • Also needed to indicate the moral standards used • Self-interest, altruism, moral absolutism, utilitarianism, relativism • Had to read the textbook and know terms

  4. Definition • How does the definition of happiness change over a lifetime?

  5. Happiness Generally • Though the definitions may vary, are there overall elements that are required for something to be considered happiness?

  6. The Story of Happiness • How do our views of happiness reflect cultural myths?

  7. Pop Happiness • Consider the mythic figures of celebrities in our culture. How is happiness defined by American media and advertising?

  8. Unit 7 Assignments • Discussion Board • What do you see as “the American dream” and how is it associated to happiness? What are some places in the world where the definition of happiness might be different? • Using the film introduction for this unit as a guide, Nepal: A Girl's Life do some research and discuss how happiness is understood in another country or culture. Give specific examples using credible sources. Check with your instructor if you need some guidance.

Unit 7 Assignments • Project, Step I, Select Interviewees • Prepare and conduct interviews with two people about their definition of happiness, how they gained this view, and whether they feel happiness is achievable. • Choose two people who vary in age and experience. Only one of the subjects can be someone you know well.This is an opportunity to learn about acquaintances and strangers as well. These should be face-to-face interviews.

What is the nature of your relationship? • Next, ask a variety of questions to get them to consider not just their definition of happiness, but its origins and development. You can use these sample questions to get you started, but should add more questions or change the interview as it develops: Has your definition of happiness changed over time? What experiences have influenced your definition? Do you expect the definition to change again?

  11. Unit 7 Assignments • Project, Step III Write an Essay using a Template • Follow the Unit 7 template for this project in DocSharing. It includes submitting a transcript of your interviews, including your questions, so take notes or record the discussion. • Finally, you should draw conclusions about the process and the answers that were given. Compare and contrast the results of the interviews. Discuss what was similar or different in the replies, whether the subjects were honest, or if the concept of happiness was difficult to define. • The essay should be at least 750 words and should employ terms from the text.
