  2. Beginning the War (1328) • Began when the French king died withoutchildren • The king of England had a French mother • This gave him a good claim to French land

  3. Loosing the Chanel (1340) • France and England began fighting over the channel • France suffers a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Sluys • England gains control of the channel

  4. Battle at Crecy (1346) • The English invaders were weakened by sickness • Took place on Crecy hill • The French knights attacked • The knights were ineffective • The English archers destroyed the attacking knights

  5. Losing Calais (1348) • Took a year to take over Calais • Custom to kill townsfolk if they fought back • Became a stronghold in the south of France for England

  6. Revolts in England (1380’s) • English peasants revolted • Taxes were unfair • Many impoverished people • Weakened England • England expected a French invasion

  7. Burgundy sides with England (1417) • The Duke of Burgundy wanted French rule • Made his own empire • Sides with England • Takes French land

  8. Joan of Arc (1429-1431) • Thought she was blessed by god • A French peasant • Inspired French troops • Lead troops against the English and Burgundies

  9. End of War (1475) • England lost Burgundy allies • Changes tides of war • France drives England out • Peaceful treaty (England and France) • England lost all French lands but Calais

  10. Aftermathh • France’s economy was heavily damaged • England was not as affected as France • Lead to the decline of chivalry • France and Burgundy fought for years
