  1. Proverbs 31:8-9 “Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (NRSV)

  2. What do you know about the civil war that happened in Guatemala from 1960-1996?

  3. Guatemala’s Civil War lasted over 30 years, ending in 1996. “Experts blame the war on persistent government corruption, U.S. backing of repressive regimes, widespread poverty and discrimination towards people of Mayan Indian ancestry.” Guatemala’s Violent Peace by Robert Gilbert March 25, 2002

  4. Murder, disappearance, torture, rape, displacement and forced recruitment into the armed forces were the experiences of many victims. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-17313508

  5. 2012 Update on Justice Earlier this year a judge ruled that ex-Guatemalan military leader Gen Efrain Rios Montt would be tried for genocide and crimes against humanity http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-17313508

  6. March 2012 A court in Guatemala has sentenced Pedro Pimentel Rios, 55, a former soldier, to life in prison for 201 killings in the village of Dos Erres in 1982. The massacre at Dos Erres was one of the most violent episodes in Guatemala's brutal 36-year civil conflict. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-17349774

  7. Some people believe that in post-war Guatemala there has not been enough focus on healing people's psychological wounds. "We must liberate the victims from all this weight they are carrying which stops them from living normal lives.“ http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-17313508

  8. What are some non-profit organizations that allow U.S. people to go to countries to volunteer to help the poor?

  9. Today we will be listening to part of the life story of Sr. Diana Ortiz, an Ursuline nun who volunteered during civil war in Guatemala; the part of the story we will share is Sr. Diana’s story of torture while she was in Guatemala.

  10. The Ursuline Nuns, of Mount Saint Joseph, Kentucky, are an order founded by Saint Angela Merici in 1535.

  11. Sister Diana Ortiz

  12. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi In Support of Sister Diana Ortiz May 2, 1996 ________________________________________ Sister Ortiz, you have waited long enough. You have waited for an end to your suffering. And you have waited for the truth. I am pleased that First Lady Hillary Clinton has taken an interest in your cause. I join my colleagues in calling on President Clinton to quickly declassify all U.S. government documents pertaining to human rights violations in Guatemala. Sister Ortiz, you and the American people deserve to know about the U.S. government's awareness of these abuses. Many of us here today have long been concerned about peace and justice in Latin America. My concern is amplified by the many constituents in my district of San Francisco who are Latin American immigrants. A full accounting of human rights violations in Latin American countries would help promote stability and lasting democracy for these important neighbors of the United States.
