  1. Arthropods Vocabulary

  2. Arthropods Vocabulary • Ganglion – collection of nerve cells • Malpighian tubules – extract wastes from blood and adds them to feces that move through the gut. • Chelicerae – fangs on the spider used to stab and paralyze prey.

  3. Arthropods Vocabulary • Pedipalps (palps) – second pair of appendages of arachnids (spiders) that are near the mouth used as sensory such as smell/taste and grab prey.

  4. Arthropods Vocabulary • Book lungs – a type of respiratory organ in spiders and scorpions; they are deep pockets on the lots of folds that are moist; blood passing through them picks up oxygen from the surrounding air.

  5. Arthropods Vocabulary • Tracheal tubes (tracheae) – tiny tubes that carry air (oxygen) directly to cells in some land arthropods; respiratory gases are exchanged across these tubes by diffusion. • Spiracles – breathing holes located along the side of the body of terrestrial arthropods • Spinnerets – organs in spiders • spin web on backside

  6. Arthropods Vocabulary • Compound eye – 1 eye made of many smaller visual units which can see in all directions. • Carapace – hard outer shell • Mandible – mouthpart adapted for biting and grinding food.

  7. Arthropods Vocabulary • Maxillae - chewing jaws located behind the mandibles • Maxillipeds – holds food

  8. Arthropods Vocabulary • Antennae – a pair of sense organs located near front of head. • Antennules – smaller pair of sense organs

  9. Arthropods Vocabulary • Cheliped – big claw in crustaceans • Swimmerets - used in movement and reproduction

  10. Arthropods Vocabulary • Telson – last division of the body and forms the tail. • Uropod – flat broad tail (lobster)

  11. Arthropods Vocabulary • Thorax – body part that lies just behind the head and and houses most of the internal organs. • Abdomen – last (3rd) body segment of an arthropod’s bodes most of the internal organs.

  12. Arthropods Vocabulary • Cephalothorax – region formed by the fusion of the head with the thorax.
