  4. Allies fight back Armed fighting ships sailed on the edges of the convoy while Merchant ships sailed safely inside Aircraft flew above to help spot germanu-boat by using radar In 1941, allies break the german code called enigma, which gave german locations, plans, and u-boat formation

War in the soviet union • In the summer of 1941, hitler sent forces into the soviet union • Blitzkrieg was unstoppable for the soviets • Germans were unprepared for the harsh Russian winter, yet held a huge part of western soviet union • Battle of Leningrad: • 200,000 Soviets died in just two months • Left with little food or fuel • Hundreds of thousands died in the months ahead

North African campaign • After the fall of france, British and Italians began fighting for control of north Africa • Meant to gain control of the Mediterranean sea meant access to oil from the middle east • Italians in Libya tried to gain british Egypt, but failed • Forced hitler to send german troops in 1941
