Terms • Interview • A planned meeting between a job applicant and an employer • Social Security • The federal government’s program for providing income when family earnings are reduced or stopped because of retirement, disability, or death • Work Permit • A written statement that makes it legal for an underage student to work for an employer

  3. Terms • Training Agreement • An agreement that outlines the purposes of a work-based learning program and defines the responsibilities of the student, parents or guardian, program coordinator & employer • Training Plan • A list of skills, attitudes, and habits that a student plans to learn during his or her work-based learning experience • Training Station Report • A periodic record o the duties performed and skills/attitudes learned at work by a student in a work-based learning program

Terms • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) • A law designed to protect workers from unfair treatment by their employers • Minimum wage • Lowest hourly rate of pay that most employees must receive ($7.25 US Federal vs $9.04 in Washington!) • Equal Pay Act • Requires employers to pay employees of both sexes equally for equal work

Terms • Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) • Oversees and enforces equal employment opportunities nationwide • Occupational Safely & Health Administration (OSHA) • The federal agency that sets and enforces job safety and health standards for workers • Priority • The point to which one thing is more important than something else

  7. Know the Law • Case 1: • Wayne has been employed as a trainee in a print shop for one month and receives less than minimum wage for his work. According to the FLSA, have Wayne’s rights been violated?

According to the FLSA, is Linda entitled to overtime pay? • Assuming overtime is paid at a rate of 1 ½ times the regular rate for each hour worked beyond 40, what is Linda’s pay for the week?

Jamilla has worked there for one year, while Bill has worked there for nine years. Jamilla found out Bill is paid a wage higher than hers. Were Jamilla’s rights violated?
