  3. Assembly Process Theme • The Light of Christ shines upon all. Hope for renewal and unity in Europe • The assembly process and goals are guided by the Christological reference (St John 8:12). • The symbolism of light is particularly significant in both eastern and western Christian tradition. • The subtitle highlights the role of the Gospel of Christ in present day Europe. The first responsibility and contribution of the Churches is to bring about renewal in our home.

  4. Aims of the Assembly ProcessThe “Terni” document • celebrate, reflect and witness together, as Christians • express the existing communion among Christians in Europe • deepen knowledge and appreciation of the different confessional-spiritual traditions • promote the overcoming of forms of tension and difficulties that persist among the Churches • strengthen and broaden the European ecumenical network

The Stages in the Process • Rome, 24-27 January 2006 • (Planning Committee and CCEE-KEK Joint Committee) • Wittenberg, 15-18February 2007 • A Church in the Protestant tradition • Local Stage, during 2006/2007 • Local events • CCEE and KEK focus on Sibiu for meetings etc • Sibiu, 4-9 September 2007 • An Orthodox Church as host

  8. Some concerns • Could be considered elaborate • A significant commitment of time, money and personnel • The Charta Oecumenica has not become part of the ecumenical landscape in many places • Difficulties of travelling to Sibiu (European Capital of Culture for 2007) • Significant demands made of the CEEE and KEK Secretariats

  9. Hopes for the Assembly Process • reawaken awareness and trust in the Christians of Europe • rediscover and deepen Christian and ecclesial identity • respond to the need for spirituality • address some common historical issues (religious freedom, migrations, peace, solidarity) • inter-religious dialogue • become aware of the responsibility that Europe has towards the other continents of the Earth
