Common Core Standards addressed: • Reading Standard for Literature 9-12 • Standard 4 • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone; including words with multiple meanings or language that is fresh, engaging or beautiful. (include Shakespeare among other authors)

  4. Objectives • Students will be able to interpret and analyze a sonnet selected by the teacher for figurative language, tone, structure and meaning. • Students will be able to teach the assigned sonnet to the class. • Each student will create his or her own sonnet incorporating poetic devices and rhyme scheme.

  5. Background knowledge • Students will already have had an introduction to Shakespeare, the sonnet form and poetic devices. (meter, rhyme scheme, imagery, tone, mood, connotation, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, diction, personification)

  6. Engaging technology • On their personal computers, students will access an audio file for their sonnet and access a powerpoint on using poetic devices at http://www.discoveryeducation.com

  7. Interpret and Analyze • Students will work in groups of 3 or 4 created by the teacher. • They will listen to the audio of their sonnet and read along with the text. • As a group, they will examine the sonnet for figurative language, tone, structure and meaning. • Students will annotate the text directly.

  8. Teach • After teacher has assessed each group’s analysis, the annotated copy of the text will be put on a document camera. • Next, the group will read and elaborate upon the language and meaning of the sonnet. • The class will annotate their copy of the sonnet to match the group’s model.

  9. Create • Individually students will compose an original sonnet on a topic of their choice, applying poetic devices, rhyme scheme and form. • Sonnets will be submitted to the teacher for assessment.

  10. Evaluate • Students will complete a self-evaluation on the poetry-writing process.
