  1. SPACE DEFENSE DECOY MEASUREMENT PROGRAM DELTA 181 In 1985 Mr. Preston, was assigned to an accelerated SDI defense program titled: Delta 181 – Trusted Vector as the chief designer of the (LWIR) long wavelength infrared sensor system. Serving in this role, he completed the LWIR telescope and cryostat in (9) months. This aggressive program with numerous department of defense agencies, contractors, universities and support units, quickly identified those individuals capable of acting as a specialized single technology source in an environment that included lethal hardware if mishandled. This sensor was the first system to collect LWIR data on cooled missile bodies and decoy balloons in space The signature plaque, Mr. Prestons’ is highlighted in red, was signed by each member and flew into space with the payload Mr. Preston followed the system to Aerojet, CA, were in four (4) months he integrated the focal plane assembly, performed system calibration and environmental testing. Leading a (4) man team, followed the system to John Hopkins University MD, space development center; joined up with the other (14) fourteen government, private and university teams. This larger team supported payload integration, calibration and environmental testing conducted at Goddard Space Center. They followed the payload to Cape Canaveral, FL for rocket launch support, mission data collection and post data evaluation.
