  1. Miss Smith’s 3rd Grade Classroom 2012 Curriculum Night Presentation

  2. Welcome Parents! I am so glad that you made it to Curriculum Night! Please feel free to take a look around the room, find your child’s desk, and read through the PowerPoint to learn more about my classroom! Please let me know if you need anything.

  3. About Miss Smith This is my 5th year of teaching. I absolutely LOVE teaching 3rd grade! I live in St. Clair. I recently received my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

  4. General Info. I have put together a folder of information for each family. Included in each folder is... • 2012-2013 Classroom Handbook which explains procedures and expectations • Student Information Sheet which just asks for general information about your child for our records • Web Site Permission Slip which allows us to take pictures in the classroom and post them on our classroom web site. Identifying information will not be posted on the web site if your child is in a picture. • Help Wanted Sheet to see what you are available to volunteer for. • Computer Contract which states all of the policies and procedures for using the classroom computers, as well as the computers in the lab. • Scholastic Book Order • Contact Information magnet which has our email addresses and phone number to contact us for your refrigerator at home, file cabinet at work, etc.

  5. Arrival • If you drive your child to school, he/she must be dropped off at the back of the building and enter through the playground doors. The doors to the building are locked until 7:20 a.m. • If your child rides the bus, he/she will be dropped off in circle drive and will enter through the doors closest to the cafeteria.

  6. Dismissal • If you pick your child up at the end of the day, you should park on the playground and wait for your child to be brought to you. Pickups are released at 3:00 p.m. • If your child rides the bus, he/she will be dismissed at 3:15 p.m. and will walk to the bus escorted by the teacher. Unless you call the school or send a note, your child will go home according to documentation on file.

  7. Attendance • Attendance is maintained on an hourly basis.  • Tardy after 8:10 a.m. • Excessive tardiness will have to be made up after school • Call the Murray office on the day of the absence or send a note with the child on the first day the child returns to school.     • Call in advance (before 11:00 a.m.) to make arrangements to pick up your child’s assignments • Children will have one day for every day absent to make up work.  For example, if they are absent 3 days, the student has 3 days to complete all work once they return to school.

  8. Visitors • ALL VISITORS (INCLUDING PARENTS) are required to report to the office.  • Please enter the building through the doors near the office at the east end of the building.  • DO NOT go directly to your child's classroom.  This is the only way we can know that intruders are not in the building.  • You must sign in even if the teacher is expecting you.  • Safety First 

  9. Expectations • I have high expectations for my students. • Students need a safe and productive environment to learn. #1 Be Safe #2 Be Respectful #3 Be Responsible

  10. Behavior • How does Classroom Dojo work? • During the course of the day, the students will earn positive or negative points based upon the behavioral choices they make. Good behavior causes their points to move up. Conversely, inappropriate behavior will cause the points to decrease. • What are the advantages? • The up-and-down movement is a significant difference from down-only approaches. A student feels a true sense of accomplishment as his or her points increase because of good choices. In addition, if a student does have to move down and “think about” the choices being made, they always have the opportunity to turn their actions and decisions around to move back up the chart. • The past is the past. Today is a new day. Make it a good one. Each day students start fresh with their points back on zero.

  11. Consequences What are some rewards earned when upper-levels of the chart are reached? • Positive note, email, or phone call home • Reward Coupon What are some consequences received when negative points are received? • Safe seat • Time Out in Another Class (Think Sheet) • Loss of Reward Recess Time to practice the skill they are struggling with • Note, email, or phone call home • PARENT CONTACT – if this level of the chart is reached, your child will use their recess time to call and explain the decisions being made.

  12. Curriculum Overview • Reading Students will read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts. • Writing Students compose a variety of written texts with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail. • Research Students are expected to know how to locate a range of relevant sources and evaluate, synthesize, and present ideas and information. • Listening and Speaking Students listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas in conversations and groups. • Oral and Written Conventions Students learn how to use the oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing.

  13. Curriculum Overview Math Problem solving and critical thinking skills are taught throughout each of the math units. Many students feel a strong sense of accomplishment as they master basic facts in multiplication and long division. Other units that are covered include measurement, time, money, fractions, decimals and geometry. Science The five main units of study include states of matter, light, shadow, and color, life of plants, earth systems, and the solar system. While teaching these specific content areas the scientific method will also be incorporated into all units. Students will use textbooks, hands-on activities, technology, audiovisual materials, labs, as well as cooperative group work to learn about science. Social Studies A significant part of the third grade year is spent on our wonderful country. The focus will be on our constitution, Martin Luther King Jr., economics, and geography.

  14. Field Trip • 3rd Grade will take a field trip to Shaw Nature Reserve this year. • We will need 2 parent chaperones for the field trip in the fall. If you would like to volunteer, please make sure you have the background checks completed. You may do this online or get forms in the office. • Field Trip is scheduled for Friday, October 12th.

  15. Parties • Students have two parties a year, December and February.  • Exact time of the parties will be determined and announced in the classroom newsletter. • Other school activities during the school year will include Field Day, Serendipity Day and field trips.  The dates of these events will be announced in the classroom newsletter.  • Treats may be sent to acknowledge a child’s birthday.  • Treats sent for class parties must be commercially prepared and prepackaged, MUST BE PEANUT and TREE-NUT FREE!

  16. Bulldog Binders • These binders will help students stay organized and learn to be responsible. • All important papers and information will be placed in these binders. • Please place notes/money in zipper pouch in front of binder. • This binder will travel to and from home everyday. • Please check these binders nightly.

  17. Ferpa • General information may be given out about a student for special events. This may include a student’s name, grade level, honors or awards achieved and a photograph. • This information has normally been for the newspaper during special events such as Serendipity Day or awards for Character Education. • If you do not want this information to be disclosed, please fill out the FERPA form and submit it to the office.

  18. MAP Test • 3rd Grade will be taking the MAP test in the spring for Math and Communication Arts. • Students will work to master concepts and skills to prepare for this test. • You can find many resources about the MAP test on my website. Go to the Parent’s Page. • Students must be able to answer questions in three formats: • Constructed Response, Multiple Choice and Performance Event. • Attendance during the MAP testing week is extremely important.

  19. Daily Communication Student Accountability Charts Students will be given a daily Student Accountability Chart at the beginning of each week. The Student Accountability Chart is a daily communication tool used to keep you informed of your child's behavior and missing assignments. Your child will be responsible for documenting the behavior they may have received throughout the day and what increase or decrease in points was for. Your child will also be responsible for recording any missing assignments for the day. Any assignment that is recorded on the assignment portion of the chart has not been turned in, and will need to be completed at home that evening. It is also your child's responsibility to show this chart to a parent or guardian. Please check the students planner and binder nightly for important papers and information.

  20. Accountability Chart

  21. Weekly Communication Friday Folders Every Friday you will receive your child's Friday Folder. Included in the folder will be your child's daily accountability chart and graded work from the past week. Every Friday your child must get a parent signature and return the Friday Folder and their Student Accountability Chart. If the Friday Folder and/or the Student Accountability Chart is not returned or signed, the student will lose their reward recess until it is returned. Please make sure that anything on the "Return to School" pocket is returned the following day. Anything that is in the "Keep at Home" pocket should be kept at home. Please do not send these papers back, as they will be recycled with the assumption that you did not want them.

  22. Website • My website provides you with an abundance of information. It allows you to see upcoming dates, announcements, spelling words, children’s published work. Please check weekly for updates.

  23.
