  2. Short-Term Effects of Drinking • Brain • Reaches brain as soon as consumed • Slows the work of the central nervous system • Thought processes are disorganized • Memory and concentration are dulled • Decision making can be badly affected

  3. Short-Term Effects of Drinking • Liver • Oxidation-changes alcohol to water, carbon dioxide, energy • Oxidize 1/3-1/2 an oz. of alcohol per hour • Alcohol intake > oxidation = Intoxication • Alcohol circulates through all body parts until oxidation is complete

  4. Short-Term Effects of Drinking • Blood Vessels • Alcohol causes an increase in blood flow • Makes the skin feel flush and warm (Sweating) • Artificial warmth, greater chance of hypothermia

  5. Short-Term Effects of Drinking • Heart • Increase in heart rate/blood pressure • Arrhythmias-abnormal heartbeats • Risk of heart attack/stroke increase

  6. Short-Term Effects of Drinking • Kidneys • Produces more urine • Main reason a person feels dehydrated after heavily drinking

  7. Short-Term Effects of Drinking • Stomach • Alcohol is immediately absorbed from the stomach into the blood • Food slows this process down, yet will not prevent intoxication • Increases the flow of gastric acid, irritating the stomach lining • Repeated irritation can cause internal bleeding

  8. Driving Under the Influence • One of the deadliest and most widespread problem with alcohol • DWI/DUI - .08 legal limit • B.A.C- .02, signs are shown • Factors of BAC • Gender • Weight • Metabolism • Amount of Alcohol • Food • Time elapsed between and after drinking

  9. Driving Under the Influence • Alcohol reduces/increases: • The ability to judge distances, speeds, and turns • The ability to judge one’s capabilities/limitations • The tendency to take risks • Slows reflexes • Forgetfulness with signaling • The ability to concentrate

Driving Under the Influence • Consequences: • DUI is the leading cause of death among teens • Each day. 11 killed, 350 injured • Not only the drunk driver is at risk • Costs: • Driver’s License confiscation • Arrest, jail, court, fine • Suspension of DL • Possible jail sentence (2nd time) • Cost of bail • Higher insurance rate • Lawsuits • Long term Effects • Tolerance • Withdrawal • “Multiplier Effect”

  11. Alcoholism • Definition • Traits: • Preoccupied with alcohol • After 1st drink, they cannot promise/predict what they say/do • Cannot manage tension without drinking • Personality changes/memory lapse

  12. Stages of Alcoholism • Stage 1 • Social drinking to relax/stress • Becomes necessary to manage stress • Intoxicated regularly • Finds excuses • Tolerance increases • Might be called a “problem drinker”

  13. Stages of Alcoholism • Stage 2 • Physically dependant, cannot stop • Drink alone/everyday, cravings begin earlier each day • More excuses, others are blamed • Denies/hide problem • Responsibility performance decreases

  14. Stages of Alcoholism • Stage 3 • Most important thing is the person’s life • Cannot be hidden, and out of control • Aggressive • Isolated from friends/family • Malnutrition • “Reverse Tolerance” – less alcohol needed • Delirum Tremens • 2/3 of alcoholics get treated
