  2. DESIGN PROJECT Our vision for the future Location: The Quelle and AEG industrial zone in the Weststadt area of Nuremberg Aims: To consider how the area could be regenerated with more functional spaces for young people and small businesses Processes: Discussion, mind-mapping and designing maquettes to present possible three dimensional ideas.

  3. Geographical location

  4. Introduction: • The Western City: dark, derelict and disused. Today we plan and tomorrow we regenerate. • After the area was abandoned by Quelle and AEG the western city fell back into its past. In 1870 the area was empty. Once again the western city has no purpose. But there is still hope. • The Comenius Project has been set the task of pulling the Western City out of yesterday into today and preparing it for tomorrow. • We hope that all of our plans to create a more economic and,environmentally-friendly, beautiful Western City will one day become a reality and give the area in brighter tomorrow. • The ideas of the group have incorporated three main features. Making the area greener is a priority in order to ensure that it will last into the future as a sustainable resource. Also, creating a new urban centre has been identified as an important issue and we feel that the western city could be this centre. Finally all of these ideas have been designed in a contemporary style to make the area appropriate for tomorrow. • Ranald Nisbet

6. Initial ideas were sketched before 3D modelling techniques were applied

  7. A mind-mapping session enabled pupils to gather ideas relating to the AEG/Quelle in the Weststadt area of Nuremberg

  8. A series of models were created taking into consideration possible forms which could be added to existing architectural structures

  9. A rooftop pool, café, museum or glass-domed museum were some of the more unusual designs

  10. Pupils explored possible sporting, recreational and garden areas within the existing AEG spaces

  11. Green spaces, interconnecting walkways and solar power were considered

  12. Organic free-flowing lines and curves could add a pleasing aesthetic

  13. Dynamic lighting and recreational areas for young people were an important element

  14. The Quelle tower could be redesigned to create more impact within the urban context.

  15. Pupils presented their models incorporating ideas linked to a sustainable, more environmentally-friendly urban centre transforming the disused Quelle and AEG in the Weststadt area of Nuremberg
