Purpose and Mission • Purpose • To enable disadvantaged minorities to secure economic self-reliance through education, housing and employment. • Mission • To assist African Americans and other minorities in the achievement of social and economic equality. • “Empowering Communities. Changing Lives.”

  3. History • Formed by a group of concerned citizens who believed in furthering the civil rights movement and assisting African Americans and other minorities in obtaining social and economic equality. • In 1973 the organization was incorporated into the state of Florida. • In 1974 became the 102nd affiliate of the National Urban League. • The Urban League has worked in the community offering programs and services that are underserved in Palm Beach County as well as acting as a public policy advocate for their rights.

Funding • The Urban League is funded through several methods. • Sponsors: • Corporate sponsors including: • NexteraEnegery, Wachovia, Leopold-Kuvin, Comcast, Bank of America, Sun-Sentinel, enterprise, Walgreen, WPTV5, Publix, at&t, citi • Event sponsors – offering branding opportunities of an event. • Marketing Partner – media or market based involvement • Small Business Partner • Community Partners – • PBC Sheriffs Department, PBC Cultural Council, PA BBQ Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., The Fortin Foundation, The Lost Tree Charitable Foundation, Salvation Army Northwest Community Center, PBC School District, PBC Commissioners, City of West Palm Beach, City of Delray Beach, City of Belle Glade, CBS Radio, Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity • Annual Membership Pledge

  5. What They Do • The UL focused on the needs of the whole family and emphasizes on youth to develop them to become economically independent and responsible leaders of tomorrow. There are 3 programs to help promote the success of the youth: • Youth and Education Empowerment Programs which believe in building academics, social and behavior responsibilities in youth that contribute to society. • Economic Empowerment Programs empower individuals to break down barriers and obtain economic equality through education. • Community Development To have a strong community you must have strong community participation. Community empowerment programs that rely on collaboration between individuals, business, faith, organizations and other non-profits.

  6. How They Conduct Their Services • The organization offers programs in housing counseling, youth development and education, community development, and crime prevention and intervention. • Each service is different therefore many methods are used. • In Support Coordination Services behavioral assessment and therapy is used. • In Youth Crime Prevention parenting skills training and employability skills are taught. • With foreclosure homes and first home buyers counseling is often used.
