  2. September News Lace up your running shoes friends!! PACERS STARTS September 6th! (M/F) A note from the Nurse: Kindergarten through 3rd grade and 5th grade students, as well as any student new to the district will have hearing and vision screenings on September 12th. If follow up is recommended, a letter will be mailed home. Please contact the school nurse if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you! We would LOVE to have them to share with others at our Chili Feed/Title Night next month! All books (children and adult) are welcome! Please bring them to Miss Kate in the office!

Check out what’s new on the shelf! We collect a lot of things here at Pinckney and we need your help! • Pop Tabs • Box Tops • Used Markers Every little bit helps! Back Snack Program Harvesters- The Community Food Network- has collaborated with Trinity Episcopal Church to bring this program to our school! Harvesters provides food that will be sent home with your student every Friday! If your family is interested in the Back Snack program please contact Ms. Kate! SHOUTOUT... to our AMAZING Leap partner LMH for providing our school and families with so many back to school supplies... YOU ROCK!!

September News Title Math Corner School + Home = Student Success The beginning of the school year is a time for reconnecting with friends, reviewing skills from the previous year and training brains for all the new material that will be learned. To ensure your child’s success, school and home must be partners working together. Each month in the newsletter information will be posted providing simple ways you can help your child with different areas of math. Math is a subject that is used in the real world every day; many times we don’t even realize we are “doing math” as we go about our day. So look for opportunities to engage your child in ways that are fun for both of you. September Suggestions • Count anything and everything from steps taken, toys, high fives, rocks, cereal, … • Look for numbers everywhere-signs, books, restaurants, stores, … • Play board games or card games • Sorry • Trouble • Uno • Crazy Eights • Monopoly • Practice counting change • Cook with your child For more ideas or information, please contact K-2 title math teacher Sherry Tamerius or 3-5 title math teacher Sarah Rossillon at 785-832-5800 Title Reading Corner Simple Yet Powerful Things to Do While Reading Aloud to Young Ones Books are a terrific way to share the joys of reading: interesting words, beautiful illustrations, and keys to unlocking the mysteries of letters, sounds, and words. Recently, researchers published work that helps us understand that simple, small actions can have a big impact on what a child takes away from sharing a book with an adult. Young children being read to almost always focus on illustrations. When they're not enjoying the pictures, they’re looking up at the adult reader. The child's eyes almost never look at the print, yet that's where children can learn the most about letters, sounds, and words. To get the most out of a shared reading, encourage your child to appreciate the pictures, and also guide their attention to printed words by focusing on the following: * The meaning of the print.Point out specific words in a book and draw the child's attention to the print. "Here are the penguin's words. He says, thank you." *The organization of the book/print. This includes understanding the way pages are read, the role of the author, and print direction. "I am going to read this page first and then this page over here next." Or "This is the top of the page. This is where I begin reading. *The letters. Help them learn letter names and that there are uppercase and lowercase letters. "This M in the red block is an uppercase letter. See how this uppercase letter is bigger than these lowercase letters?" *The words. Help your child recognize some written words, and the match between spoken and written words.   6. Pinckney Elementary Needs your help! We are looking for personal care items for our sharing shelf. Can you help us gather the following items? Shampoo Body Wash TOOTHPASTE DEODORANT Laundry Detergent Etc. Our shelf started as just a couple OF bins and has transformed into this!
