  1. The CASLIN Uniform Information Gateway for Integrating Heterogeneous Resources Bohdana Stoklasová National Library of the Czech Republic Pavel Krbec Charles University

  2. Content • The Beginning of the Project : Reasons • Goals and Participants • Tools: Conspectus, MetaLib and SFX • Outlook – 2002 and Later

  3. The Beginning of the Project : Reasons • Hybrid libraries provide information from both traditional and electronic sources and, in addition to their own information resources, rely to an ever-increasing extent on external domestic as well as foreign resources • Heterogeneous resources heterogeneous and international nature of resources: new possibilities, but also a number of problems that libraries must resolve in order to provide the maximum possible comfort for their users • Users are changing. They will not be satisfied with only an on-line library catalogue with a user-unfriendly interface. They want much more. Being users of the Internet, they have grown accustomed to having an immediate access, and they quite naturally also expect of libraries to provide an easy access to information. • Information market If libraries and librarians are to successfully compete on the information market, they have to offer qualitatively new services.

  4. Heterogeneous resourcesPresent situation without UIG L Clients must • deal with different user interfaces (more or less friendly) of different services • learn a number of different query formats • repeatedly log in and log out • handle outputs of vastly different character • resolve problems of different output formats and of different diacritics coding • handle additional tools to be able to unify the different outputs

  5. Heterogeneous resourcesPresent situation with UIG J • integration of different resources and services in a single user-friendly environment • no need to repeated log in and out • possibility to present queries in a uniform manner • possibility to receive outputs, i.e. both information on documents and the primary documents proper (most importantly full texts, but also graphics, sound, etc.) in a uniform format • offers of further relevant information • possibility to work in the clients' own predefined environment with predefined preferred sources • most of what is so annoying to users today should take place "in the background"

  6. Collection building and accessibility Present situation without UIG L An obstacle for a full accessibility to holdings of Czech libraries and an easy navigation of users seeking information on a specific subject is • a poor-quality description of the content of collections on pages of most of Czech libraries • an absence of data allowing an overall view of the collections of Czech libraries(a comprehensive and easy-to-understand map of Czech libraries built on the bases of common methodology) • coordination in the development and utilization of collections is not one of strong points of the Czech library sector • consequently, scarce resources will get wasted – insufficient financial resources for the purchase of documents are not optimally used. At the same time, no strong convincing arguments (numbers and diagrams) are being presented that would enhance the chances of Czech libraries to get more money for the development of their holdings

  7. Collection building and accessibility Future situation with UIG J A strong tool for a full accessibility to holdings of Czech libraries and an easy navigation of users seeking information a specific subject will be • a good-quality description of the content of collections on pages of most of Czech libraries • an availability of data allowing an overall view of the collections of Czech libraries(a comprehensive and easy-to-understand map of Czech libraries built on the bases of common methodology) • coordination in the development and utilization of collections is one of strong points of the Czech library sector • consequently, scarce resources will not get wasted – insufficient financial resources for the purchase of documents are optimally used. At the same time, strong convincing arguments (numbers and diagrams) are being presented that would enhance the chances of Czech libraries to get more money for the development of their holdings

  8. Goals • Integration of heterogeneous information resources and offering new, uniform and user-friendly access to them • Creating a comprehensive and easy-to-understand map of collections available in Czech libraries built on the bases of common methodology; closer coordination in the development and utilization of collections

  9. UIG Projects and institutions Present situation • Uniform Information Gateway for Hybrid LibrariesR&D, pilot project(National Library + Charles University) • STMPortal– LI (STL + 11) • Uniform Information Gateway– VISK 8 – national (internatinal) project

  10. Connection between the UIG project and US sources and institutions • CASLIN • US sources and databases • Czech National Bibliography and OCLC • Conspectus

  11. Why CASLIN UIG • The smooth start of the UIG project was made possible by the results achieved in previous years within CASLIN project activities http://www.caslin.cz:7777/caslin/historie/document.html (especially in standardization and the setting up of a uniform basis of a library network), the UIG being one of its logical outcomes and continuations, which is also the message on the UIG opening screen :

  12. US resources and databases • UIG users can use a number of catalogues and databases of libraries abroad. The example shows the US libraries most frequently used in our country

  13. Czech National Bibliography in WorldCat • National Library of the Czech Republic, based on an agreement with the OCLC, has been sending records of the Czech National Bibliography to the WorldCat catalogue for a number of years where they can be used by foreign libraries and their users. • The application of AARC2R and LCSH in the Czech Republic makes mutual cooperation easier. At present, conversion to UNIMARC-MARC 21 is necessary; in the future, Czech libraries plan to implement MARC 21, which will make the situation even easier.

  14. LCSH in English Mihajlo Rostohar (1878-1966) v tradici celostní a experimentální psychologie = Mihajlo Rostohar (1878-1966) fruitful tradition of integrate and experimental psychology / [uspořádal Josef Švancara] . -- Vyd. 1. – Brno : Masarykova univerzita, 1999. -- 115 s. : il., portréty ; 24 cm. – (Sborník prací Filozofické fakulty brněnské univerzity ; P 3 (1999) UDC: * 159.9-051 * 159.9.07 * 159.9.019.2 * 378.4 * (066) SH - Czech Rostohar Mihajlo, 1878-1966 psychologové -- Slovinsko psychologové -- Česko -- stol. 20. experimentální psychologie tvarová psychologie univerzity -- Česko SH English Rostohar Mihajlo, 1878-1966 Psychologists -- Slovenia Psychologists -- Czech Republic Psychology, Experimental Gestalt psychology Universities and colleges -- Czech Republic

  15. Tools Heterogeneous resources integration (P. Krbec):

  16. Tools Collection building and accessibility Conspectus

  17. Why Conspectus • Ready, internationally applied and tested tool (born in the USA) • Internationally understandable (codes and indicators) • Completely solving our problem of • a poor-quality description of the content of collections on pages of most of Czech libraries • an absence of data allowing an overall view of the collections of Czech libraries(a comprehensive and easy-to-understand map of Czech libraries built on the bases of common methodology) • coordination in the development and utilization of collections

  18. Conspectus hierarchy • 24 divisions – classification independent • 500 subject categories (DDC, LC, UDC) • 4000 subjects

  19. Divisions 1. Antropologie, etnografie 2. Biologické vědy 3. Divadlo, film, tanec 4. Ekonomické vědy, obchod 5. Filozofie a náboženství 6. Fyzika a příbuzné vědy 7. Geografie. Geologie. Vědy o zemi 8. Historie a pomocné historické vědy. Biografické studie 9. Hudba 10. Chemie. Krystalografie. Mineralogické vědy 11. Jazyk, lingvistika a literatura 12. 20. Examples of the Conspectus application at the NL • collection overview • collection assessment • collection development strategy http://www.nkp.cz/konspekt

  21. Conspectus application in Czechia – plans • „subject crossroads“ in the UIG • dividing responsibility for subject gateways builidng • … other
