  3. What is Health Rocks!®? • Teens and adults as co-leaders • Teens provide a positive role model • Message is more effective coming from teens • Youth-adult partnerships are strengthened • Focused on 8 to 12-year-olds

  4. Characteristics of 8 to 12-Year Olds • Physical • Physical involvement is important • Hands-on activities reinforce learning • Youth are developing coordination

  5. Characteristics of 8 to 12-Year Olds • Social • Group activities are best • Activities need to give youth choices and let them make decisions • Peer influence and acceptance by groups becomes more important

  6. Characteristics of 8 to 12-Year Olds • Emotional • Progress and achievement should be emphasized • Youth are beginning to grow independent so may begin to question authority • Concepts of right and wrong are developing

  7. Characteristics of 8 to 12-Year Olds • Intellectual • Instructions must be simple • Abstract concepts can still be difficult • Real-life objects and multi-sensory experiences strengthen learning • Lesson time can be increased
