  2. Quran: The Miracle of Revelation Lecture 4 The Quran and Hadith as Revelation

  3. Sources of Wahi • In Islam we have 2 sources of wahi: • 1. Quran - Revealed by Allah through the angel Gibrael. • 2. Hadith – The doings and sayings of Rasulullah ﷺ. This is also considered wahi because when Rasulullah ﷺ DOES something, or SAYS something or APPROVES of something – it is through the divine inspiration of Allah that the Rasul (saw) acts – this verified by the Quran and by our scholars. VERY important that we understand the status of the Hadith within our religion.

  4. Quran – Linguistic Meaning • Linguistic meaning – 3 opinions • No meaning • Derived from QARANA, which means to join. Because joins together versus to produce a surah. Those surahs join together to produce the book. • (Majority view) Comes from QARA’A – THE RECITATION. The point of the Quran is that we recite it. Historically accurate because the Quran was only recited at the time of Rasulullah ﷺthere was no written mushaf.

  5. Quran – Technical Meaning • Technical meaning: 1. Arabic speech of Allah. Therefore a translation of the Quran is not the Quran. The rulings that apply to the Quran – like not touching without wadu or in a state of purity – these rules apply to the ARABIC Quran. However, we should still respect it. 2. Revealed upon Rasulullah ﷺ 3. Transmitted in word and meaning through tawatur. 4. It cannot be copied.

  6. Tawatur • Tawatur refers to the chain of transmission. • So many chains of transmission that it can’t be false. • Example: If I told you that there was cake in the other building. It may be true may not be true, can’t believe. • So now all these different chains of transmission are coming such that there is no way the information is false. • So Quran was transmitted in every generation through so many people that there is no way that it can be false. • If someone in Turkey tried to make up an ayah all the other chains from around the worlds would not support that and if someone tries to remove an ayah no one would support it.

  7. Hadith • Linguistically: News or story • Technically: Refers to the deeds sayings or approval of Rasulullah ﷺ • Hadith is any saying, any deed, any approval of Rasulullah ﷺ • Sunnah are the regullar habits or the ways of Rasulullah ﷺ • Example: Drink water while sitting – we have been told that no one should drink while standing, but on rare occasions you will find hadith that the prophet (saw) drank while standing, but those are hadith but those don’t form the sunnah

  8. Difference between Quran and Hadith • 1. Words: Hadith is the words of a human being. Allah inspires a human to make a statement or inspires to do something and that is said by Rasulullah ﷺas he chooses to annunciate it/ Quran is the exact word of Allah. • 2. Quran all transmitted by tawatur, but the hadith is not transmitted by tawatur. Tawatur means many people. • 3. Quran is recited in salah, but hadith is not recited
