Mission and Vision of COOP Mission Statement for COOP Monitor and maintain the nation’s local climate and weather data record to support weather and climate forecasts, watches, warnings, and the continuity and preservation of the climate record and signal. Vision Statement for COOP Provide official unbiased, high quality weather and climate observations and data stewardship for all data users. Collect and provide daily observations for input into decision support at all levels of government and private entities. • A network of 10,240 observations in all states and territories • Organic Act of 1890 established the organized network – but ongoing prior 1644…

  3. Network • In my job for 1 ½ years • Collect data on Tmax, Tmin, Precip, Snowfall, Liquid water equivalent, Snowfall rate, Soil Temperature, Evaporation Rates, River measurements • Annual Budget is $1.87 M prior to taxes for equipment/ maintenance/ observations

  5. Observations • Daily via phone, internet (25%) or monthly on paper (75%) numbers are dynamic • QC done at 122 local NWS Forecast Offices and other WSO stations • Data sent to NCDC for more QC • Bias developed for urbanization, time of observation and other effects • Data published
