Why Diagram a Sentence? • Segerstrom ESLR: Resourceful Learner- Think Critically • College Board AP Goal: Apply effective strategies and techniques in their own writing. • Diagramming is a way to show the relationships between the various parts of a sentence. It shows the structure of a sentence, and it can sometimes help the writer recognize a grammatical error in a sentence.

  3. The Subject and Verb • Diagram for a simple sentence with a simple subject (noun or pronoun) and simple predicate (verb): • Dogs howl. • Try it with these simple sentences: • Bees sting. • Jack-o-lanterns glow. dogs howl

  4. Really easy right? • You should have exactly this: • Now let’s add some adjectives and adverbs; they go under the subject that they modify on a diagonal line: bees sting Jack-o-lanterns Jack-o-lanterns glow glow the orange brightly

  5. Try a Few More • The warm cookies tasted chocolaty. • The alarm clock rang early. • The old man walked slowly. • The woman wrote neatly. • The painting seemed sad.
